Captain Marvel review: The MCU's first female-led movie doesn't quite soar

Captain Marvel is upon us. 21 films, 11 years, and the Marvel Cinematic Universefinally has its first female-led solo movie.

For a franchise that hasn't always been the best at representation (we're still waiting for our first LGBTQ+ character, guys), a lot is riding on Brie Larson's superpowered warrior. Is she up to the challenge of righting the MCU's wrongs?

Captain Marvel opens with our hero Carol Danvers living on the Kree homeworld Hala as a member of their military's elite Starforce squad. Under her charming mentor (Jude Law), the amnesiac warrior fights against the insidious shapeshifting Skrulls, who are slowly infiltrating the Kree Empire, as well as apparently being responsible for the loss of her memory.

But when a mission goes awry and leaves her stranded on Planet C-53 (known as 'Earth' by the brutish locals) in the 1990s, Carol starts to question the things she has been told.

Very bland ratings so far. Boring seems to be the general feeling. Not going to watch it myself so do not really care.

Quite enjoy these sci-fi yarns but, ratings have put me off!!

I try to go to a movie a week, and that is the only new one on this week, so I'll go, but I ain't holding out any hopes for a great movie.

Seems that all these type of movies confuse "strong women" with someone that kicks ass.

Unfortunately, most of the new movies have been disappointing, most of all "Mortal Engines" which should have been a real double happy of a movie and ended up being a squib.

I went to see it. Better than I expected, except the ending which was stupid.

I actually respected her character, which surprised me.

So, better than expected, but didn't quite get it right.

5 out of 10. A better ending would have made it a 7.
