A 60-year-old Thai man, wanted for allegedly duping three women out of Bt212,000 with a false promise of jobs abroad nearly a decade ago, was arrested in Bangkok’s Khlong Sam Wa district last Thursday, Immigration Bureau chief Pol Lt-General Surachet Hakpal told a press conference on Tuesday.

Suthep Phuhom’s arrest came after the Thailand Action Taskforce for Information Technology Crime Suppression (Tactics) had received the case file on February 28 to hunt for the fugitive before the case’s 10-year statute of limitations is up, said Surachet, speaking in his capacity as Tactics deputy director.

Suthep was accused of luring three persons with a false promise of jobs in Australia in 2010, resulting in the women in question borrowing money – Bt60,000 (rising to Bt72,000 after overdue interest), Bt76,000 (rising to Bt136,000) and Bt76,000 (rising to Bt110,200), respectively – to pay him a total of Bt212,000 for Thai traditional-massage training fees and travel expenses.

Although they underwent the massage course, the three did not get to travel to work in Australia as promised, and they were unable to get hold of Suthep.

Realising they had been duped, they filed a compliant with Min Buri police that year, resulting in Min Buri Court issuing three arrest warrants against Suthep over fraud charges.

After his arrest in Soi Mitmaitree, in Sam Wa Tawan Ok sub-district, Suthep, denying the charges, told police that he used to work for a tour company and that his Thai national ID card may have been stolen for use in the crime, Surachet added.

He must have been a good talker. The thai ladies probably figured living and working in Australia would be fantastic.I think it's bad that there are people in the world that they don't do anything except con people.

So after NINE years he's finally brought to justice after - 'received the case file on February 28 to hunt for the fugitive before the case’s 10-year statute of limitations is up,'.  So it only took two weeks to find him once Big Joke was on the case!

Sadly, this is a common scam.  Picking berries in Finland or Sweden, picking apples in Australia or the US. these things are all too common. These recruiters, take rake off, people pay a fee up front to get the job. Some times jobs actually exist many times they do not.

BTW my state and two others have outstanding Extradition requests for a Thai national who pulled a stunt like this. In his case they actually got to the US. However, no jobs – the US had to house them, then air tickets back to Thailand. Roughly a million and a half dollars.

When this group of people returned to Bangkok they marched to the swindlers house to try and get the money they paid him back. Unfortunately, when they got to his place, it was surrounded, and protected by police.

Oh and this is how The Two English Language Thai Newspapers, played the story … it read “American Company” swindles Thai’s with fake jobs. The fact that this “American company” was set up and owned by a Thai national who now has fled the US to Thailand, and has outstanding extradition requests from the US for repayment out on him ... was … inexplicably left out of the article; Shock, Gasp, Horror!  ????

Hope you did not spill your morning coffee with that stunning revelation, but, Carry on.

9 years to pick this scum up - another great effort from RTP

Better late than never.

Hope they get some money back,

Thailand has to many of this type of git, tricking,  the not so smart out of money.

Hope he get 9 years in jail,   that would be about right.
