Turnout at 65% lower than expected

The Election Commission (EC) president Ittiporn Boonpracong concluded on Sunday that 65.96 per cent of eligible voters had turned up to exercise their right, and postponed the announcement of initial election results to Monday after 90 per cent of the votes had been counted.

 

According to data provided by the EC’s Rapid Report system, the pro-junta Phalang Pracharat Party appeared to have won the election with over 7.5 million votes, while Pheu Thai came in a close second with 7.1 million votes after counting progressed to 93 per cent on Sunday night. 

 

New player Future Forward outdid Thailand’s oldest Democrat Party with 5.2 million votes. The Democrats won 3.2 million votes nationwide at 93 per cent of vote counting, leading to its leader Abhisit Vejjajiva stepping down. 

 

Medium-sized Bhumjaithai Party had won 3.2 million votes as of 10.30pm Sunday night and was comfortably at fifth place. 

 

Ittiporn told the press on Sunday night that of the 90 per cent votes counted, 5.6 per cent were spoiled, while 1.5 per cent were no votes.

So there you have it, 'Future Forward' massively split the vote paving the way for whoever officially wins this election in the end to win it ????

 

Prayuth can thank them for his predicted victory because that's the only reason he's winning it.

A coalition is in the pipeline with the current  PM at the Helm.

I agree, but the people voted for the junta party in far greater numbers then expected. IMHO it clearly shows that popular policies and MP vote buying works. 

 

I always said so and was always told it was not true but how else did they get so many votes. They have almost as many votes as the PTP (who lost a huge amount of votes).

 

Sad state of affairs, the only good things for me is that the PTP lost so many votes, and the future forward is the slowly upcoming star. Democrats absolutely decimated (now we know where part of the pro junta votes came from)

35% of the people did not, for whatever reason, take advantage of one of our great rights: suffrage. People really do need to be educated on the importance of this right.

The other 65% have spoken and we'll know in May how it all pans out.

I doubt the next four years will be as stable as some hope, but sometimes I am wrong.

Turnout 65% but some constituencies had almost double the amount of votes counted compared to people registered and allowed to vote.???? Nothing to see here...move along. 

Voting is supposed to be "compulsory" in Thailand.  So what happens with those that don't vote?

Not surprising at all when you hear from the locals up here. Even though we are supposed to be in RED country there is a dislike for Thaksin and his cronies. Some of the village heads were supporting the army party and many people would follow them.

Your the first I hear this from everyone on this forum was always saying how the pro junta party would not get any votes and how the popular policies would not work in drawing votes.  Also they said that the MP's who switched sides would lose a lot. It seems all these things were wishful thinking as the pro junta party preformed far better then expected.

 

It certainly does not make me happy, I do like that the PTP lost a huge number of votes and that the FFW got so big (relatively). But not happy that the army party now stands a chance to govern.

I guess when a lot of folks need to work 12 hrs plus to make $10 dollars then taking a day off to vote would be a real luxury, especially when the outcome was basically pre decided..

Yep a big portion of it stuck in New Zealand

In Thai its "Anakot mai" or "New Future"

That doesn't seem logical. The two main factions had the biggest vote count. Future Forward did fantastically well. But are you suggesting that all who voted for them would automatically have voted for PTP if they weren't in the election?

If they fined anyone who didn't vote they won't pay the fine because the mail delivering it will go to peoples address that have long gone. Relatives or ex partners won't pay the fine. And thats only the one registered.

How can it be 65% turnout when it's compulsory? BBC said the postal and early voting was higher than usual.

Perhaps, but they are the best hope for the future and had to start sooner or later. There really wasn't going to be a great option but Prayuth is probably the worst option.

Was the turn out really that low or were some votes not in line with the mandated result and were discarded?

So that was why they had more votes cast than voters.

They'd prepared too many fake votes!
