Democrats meet to discuss future of party

Senior members of Democrat Party – which suffered heavy losses in the March 24 general election – met on Friday to discuss the future of the party.

 

The Party did not win any parliamentary seats in Bangkok and lost many seats in the South which used to be its stronghold.

 

The party’s leader, former prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, resigned as head of the party, keeping his promise that he would step down if the party won less than 100 seats. 

 

The Election Commission has not yet announced the official results of the election but Abhisit’s party reportedly won only 33 seats.

 

The meeting at the party’s headquarter was called by party veteran Thaworn Senneam, who reportedly won the most votes in Songkhla and is among a group of party members who could secure votes in the South.

 

The executive members of the party were seen arriving at the headquarters, including chief advisor Chuan Leekpai, Therdpong Chaiyanan, Nipon Wisityuttasart and acting party leader Siriwan Prassajaksatrupai.

 

Abhisit, acting party leader Jurin Laksanavisit, acting secretary general Juti Krairiksh and acting deputy party leader Korn Chatikavanich did not attend the meeting.

 

Thaworn told reporters before the meeting that the meeting was formal and no-one acted as the chair. 

 

Asking why only a small number of members attended the meeting, Thaworn said they had other engagements and there would be more talks in the future. 

 

As of 1.30pm, the meeting was ongoing although party chief adviser Chuan Leekpai had left the meeting. He said he came to listen to the opinions. 

 

The next meeting has not yet been fixed.

The party is hopelessly split between the supporters of Suthep and thus Prayuth, and other more progressive members. The trouble is Future Forward is far more attractive for those hoping for a more democratic Thailand so only conservative members of the party remain, and half of those bolted to Palang Pracharat.

Looks to me like the voters gave him the results needed to keep his promise to resign.

They have quite obviously been aligned with the military and elite in the continuation of minority rule for quite a while. That has seen their demise and scenes of yellow protesters closing down airports have driven in the final nails.

The party has been held hostage by extreme right ex-PAD and PDRC members. Add to the fact that they have a weak leader who is willing to toss democracy to the wayside and take short-cut to fulfill his political ambition. I hope the young progressive members will leave and form another party. Dem Party is in a shit hole so deep that they will be unable to climb out of the abyss and position themselves for future elections.

We all knew this was coming.  I did not meet anyone who wanted to back the yellows.  Snivel servants and big company types wanted the army.  The rest wanted the reds or Future Forward.  Abhisit should stay out of politics.  He is too heavily tarnished.

In an authoritarian state that is still weak enough to feel the need to go through the motions of democracy, it's pretty uncomfortable and really only a short-term proposition to straddle the barbed wire fence that separates the authoritarians from the true democrats.

 

States in crisis have no middle ground. People have to choose.

Need to change their party name. You can't call yourselves "Democrats" and then support a military junta.
