Daily News reported that fifty nine people died in road accidents on Sunday.

The fourth day of the "Seven Deadly Days of Songkran" brought the total to 237.

This was said to be less than last year.

A police spokesman has said that arrests for DUI are up 20%.

Sunday saw 567 accidents nationwide with 598 injuries.

From 11th to 14th April inclusive there had been 2,232 accidents and 2,322 injuries.

Lt-Gen Damrongsak Kittipraphat of the Road Safety Directing Center said that drunk driving was responsible for 42% of accidents with speeding accounting for 25%.

Some 78% of all acccidents involved motorcycles with 67% of accidents happening on straight stretches of roads. The rest of the accidents occurred in built up areas and side roads.

He said that the worst time for accidents was 4 to 8 pm each day.

He said campaigns and enforcement had led to a 20% rise in DUI arrests.

The 67% of accidents happening on straight stretches of roads statistic must be a world class number one surely no one can beat this????

What's different here,,,,,,,,,the daily average road deaths is over 50 a day all year long based on a news article posted here on TV last month,,,,,,,,,,,so I see no significant increase compared to a non-Songkran day. It's business as usual

Why don't the RSDC stay committed with a better campaign:  "365 Deadly Days of Thailand"? Or they've planed to take a holiday until next Songkran?

Build speed barriers along highways...
This would greatly reduce fatality when vehicles loss control and would not smash into the trees.

100% of these stats are total nonsense.

88.2% of these statistics are made up on the spot.

Really some of people very like expiry life in songkran !!!

Note :: (( some of stupid people with drunk driving))

Thats an average of 59.25 people per day !

The Vietnam War did not have an average death toll that high on the American side

A National disgrace.

They'd kill themselves on the barriers instead... you can't stop a Thai doing what they do best!

Numbers 2 and 3 are a LOCK.

Considering that the death rate on a normal day is mid 60s, then actually it should be called "The seven not quite as deady as usual days" as the police farce are compelled to actually get out there and do something due to media and political pressure to make it look good. So, ironically, you are actually safer to travel at these times than normal when apathy reigns.

Doesn't take into account accidents caused by texting while driving
