Have you ever tried to explain origin of food to Thai.

Featured Replies

Without foreigners, Thai food would be different.

Nobody believe me but Thai food today was not the same before.

Chilli, tomatoes, Papaya, corn comes from America.

Try telling a Thai that chilli or papaya came with Falang.

I tried to explain that to an Italian

No Asian water buffalo, no mozzarella di bufala

No noodles from China, no pasta (they only had flat lagana before they got the idea to cut up the sheet into noodles)

No tomatoes from Mexico, no Sugo al Pomodoro

No potatoes from South America, no Gnocchi

No corn or chiles from Mexico, no Polenta or Penne all’Arrabbiata

I'm guessing Europeans would be MORE ignorant of their foods origins

But but but we make a this dish for hundreds of years the same a recipe

Thais will just shrug because they know Thailand is a melting pot with things from everywhere. 😀

Thai food, originated way before importation of other foods, especially from USA, or the Americas. Really depends how far back one wants to go in history. 16th Century onward, and imports were originally probably only for the elites of the time.

Even now, there's a reason why many still only grow & forage for their meals. Imported food simply isn't in the budget.

I missed the point? Regardless what's in it [the answer] for you I can see nothing but frustration coming out of the question
