I understand I get my reentry permit after passport control at DMK. Do they stamp me out first or do I need to find the reentry desk before being stamped out? 

Get your re-entry first prior to getting stamped out by Imm.

You go through passport control first and get stamped out. Then you apply for a re-entry permit before going through security.

Before you queue up for immigration control, ask one of the staff there where is reentry permit. 

At Don Muang, you get stamped out, and then immediately go to the office that handles overstays, right behind the immigration desks. The same office does re-entry permits.
