BANGKOK, 19 April 2019 (NNT) - The Cabinet’s meeting this week resulted in many resolutions, including preparations for the construction of the third runway at Suvarnabhumi Airport to accommodate an increased number of flights, and preparation of the plastic waste management roadmap which is considered a major problem that the government has placed importance on.

The Cabinet’s meeting approved a draft Roadmap for Plastic Waste Management, 2018 – 2030 in accordance with the order of the Prime Minister which engages all sectors in reducing the use of plastic materials to protect the environment.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment has prepared a draft roadmap to be used as a policy framework for plastic waste management.

It is divided into two phases. The first phase is reducing the use of plastic and using environmentally friendly renewable materials instead. By the year 2019, three types of plastic must be discontinued. They include plastic bottle caps, oxo-degradable plastics and plastic microbeads. By the year 2022, another four types of plastic will be discontinued. They include plastic bags with a thickness of less than 36 microns, Styrofoam food containers and plastic straws.

The second phase will be to recycle 100 percent of the target plastic waste by 2027. The unwanted waste will be disposed of properly. This is expected to reduce the amount of plastic waste by approximately 780,000 tons per year and save about 3.9 million baht in waste management costs per year.

The Cabinet meeting also allowed Airports of Thailand Company Limited or AOT to construct a third runway at Suvarnabhumi Airport, with a budget of over 21 billion baht, on the condition that the AOT undertakes an environmental impact analysis both in terms of the quality of the environment and natural resources and health.

The construction of the third runway is aimed at allowing Suvarnabhumi Airport to accommodate a greater volume of air traffic. Once the construction is completed, it will be able to accommodate 30 flights per hour. When the two existing runways are included, it will be able to accommodate up to 94 flights per hour. This will effectively increase the competitiveness of the country and raise Thailand to the position of aviation hub of the ASEAN region.

Meanwhile Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha is scheduled to attend a ceremony to celebrate the successful construction of the Thai-Cambodian Friendship Bridge (Ban Nong Ian-Sateung Bot); a ceremony to lay a foundation stone for the construction of the Customs House building and the roadway connecting the Thai border and the Cambodian border, the opening ceremony of Ban Khlong Luek Boundary Post Railway Station, a ceremony for the signing a joint agreement on a train service operation between the Thai government and the Cambodian government, and a ceremony for the delivery of a diesel train on Monday 22, 2019, in Aranyaprathet district, Sa Kaeo province.

The draft agreement on the train service operation between Thailand and Cambodia will connect the transportation network of the southern economic corridor and promote the transfer of people and goods between Thailand and Cambodia, which will benefit trade, investment, tourism and the travels of the people from both countries.
