I got everything together and went to the jomtien immigration office. the official looked at my paperwork and processed it without comment. I asked for a multiple entry and he said maybe tomorrow. I then paid 1,900 baht at another counter and came back to the original official. he then sent me to the lady sitting at the desk behind him. she looked at everything and then called him over. she then said, James, you misunderstand. you have an o-a visa and used it July 6th, 2006 [o-a multiple - issued on march 14, 2006 - first used it to come to Thailand May 6, 2006 - vacationed out of country July 6, 2006 for two weeks - reentered and got a one year stamp July 7?, 2007] ......she then got rid of all my other paperwork and brought out a new single page form all in Thai. and filled it out in English with simple information and told me to sign it, I was reluctant since it was in Thai. but didn’t want to argue with her, she was all business. she kept all the paperwork and my passport then gave me a number and told me to come back tomorrow. I asked if I will have a multiple entry stamp and she said after I come back and get my passport tomorrow, I can go to counter 1 for a reentry permit. if I want multiple I can pay 3,800 baht. she said see you tomorrow and sent me on my way. what happened? Note: I am leaving the country april 10 for two weeks, that is why i didnt wait longer since once i leave i cant come back with the same visa stamp, also i have had my 800k in bank for 3 months and want to use it.

If you have a period of stay valid until July XX 2007, there is no need to make an extension application now but if you are leaving the country and want to keep that validity stamp alive you need the re-entry permit (multi if several trips)

As your visa validity is only good until March 14, when you come back later than that date WITH a re-enrty permit, you will be allowed to stay until the July XX 2007 date.

You will then need to make an extension application 2-3 weeks before the expiry of that period of stay (july XX 2007) with all your paper work

See first what they will give you tomorrow but I suspect only a re-entry permit or maybe they extend for 1 yesr.....

All you had to to was exit the country before March 14 and return and you would have had another one year permitted to stay. As you had exited earlier you were not expected to extend now even if you did not take advantage of the free one year option and extensions are expected between 4 and 3 weeks of your permitted to stay expiry. In other words in June 2007 they would expect you to extend.

At any rate that is history and no big thing. You have paid the 1,900 baht for the extension of stay and will now have to pay the 3,800 baht for multi re-entry permit if you plan more than 3 trips during this coming year - if you plan less it would be better to do it one at a time at a cost of 1,000 baht each. This is not a loss as you would have had to obtain a re-entry permit once you passed March 14th for any travel even if you had used the extra one year option.

Yes, I knew I needed to renew anyway since i will travel in april and my visa wouldn't be good anymore. I learned this from Lopburi3 in an earlier post and I thank him for that.

what happended today. I went to pickup my passport and they gave me a retirement stamp good till July 6th 2008. [july is the date when i returned from my last trip]. that worked out well, i got 16 months.

I then went for an exit visa for my trip in april and asked for multible. got it. the imigration officer was efficient but surly. At least that's better than friendly and inefficient.

thanks for everyone's help, especially you, Lopburi

Wow you was lucky

They gave you an extension of stay of 16 months !!!!! and a multi re-entry to match.

This shows immigration can and do bend the rules butin this case in your favour

Congratulation !

That was an extension based on a non-OA. It seems that the extension period has been added onto the existing period. Don’t know if this is standard procedure when extending from an OA.
