Thai private sector lowers 2019 export growth projection to 2.1%

 

 

The Thai Chamber of Commerce and Board of Trade have reduced Thailand’s 2019 export growth projection from 3.1% to 2.1% citing several unfavorable external factors. Meanwhile, the External Trade Promotion Department maintains its 8% export growth forecast.

 

Mr. Sanan Aung-ubonkul, vice president of TCC and BoT, said today that, in order to maintain the 3.1% growth projection, the value of monthly exports from now on must average US$21.5 billion.

 

He pointed out that, even though the amount of exports so far this year is huge, their prices were not as good as they had been in the previous year.  However, he expects that exports will pick up in the second half of this year.

SMB projects 3.6%.

Even then that seems optimistic.

No thanks to the Bank of Thailand that has maintained a strong baht - much to the chagrin of exporters.

This kind of news will unnerved all elected government as they have to answer to the discontent of the voters and needing to seek the endorsement of the people. However this non elected government will not have the same kind of worries and they will continue to gain wealth regardless.

We keep hearing over and over like a broken record how the US v China trade war is the the cause of the export downturn. When things get desperate they blame it on a global downturn; of course there is never a mention of the high baht. Why is it that it is always someone else who causes Thailand's woes? 

How is it then that Vietnam can show an export growth of 7.5% against Thailand's 2.1%?  Vietnam says the trade war has not affected them in any way. To the contrary they claim the trade war has spurred their exports.

Thailand just sits there weeping and wringing it's hands. The PM should be out there doing something to boost exports like kissing frogs and using the same supernatural powers that he uses to control the weather.
