Authorities in Krabi were preparing to resume the search for a missing pensioner from the Netherlands this morning.

Charlie, 83, disappeared after taken his beloved American Shepherd dog out for a walk on Monday evening.

His 48 year old wife Phikun Srisomjit became concerned when he did not return home by nightfall. She checked his usual route in the Klong Yai area of Thap Prik sub-district but he could not be found.

Neighbors reported seeing him in the late afternoon.

A party of police, rescue teams and 20 neighbors were mobilized searching in orchards and along the length of the canal but the search was eventually called off last night.

Phikun said it was his regular daily habit to take the dog for a walk and her husband would always return before it got dark.

She was very concerned especially given the age of her husband, reported Thai Rath.

Dog watches over Dutch man, 84, found drowned in Krabi pond

By The Nation

A Dutch man was found drowned in a pond in Krabi’s Muang district on Tuesday morning, while his pet dog was found waiting at the water’s edge, police said.

The body of Sharles Haarlemmermeer, 84, was spotted by local villagers, who alerted the Muang police station at 8am.

The water-retaining pond of the Krabi branch of the Provincial Water Authority is about one kilometre away from the house the Dutch man lived in with his Thai wife, Pikul Srisomjit.

The pond holds raw water that is used to make tap water.

Police said the man might have accidentally fallen into the pond while walking on its edge, or perhaps fainted and fell due to the heat. A large canvas covered the edges and bottom of the pond, and police believe Haarlemmermeer was unable to climb up because of the material’s slippery edge.

Pikul said her husband left home at 4pm for a daily walk with his American Shepherd dog. She sought help from a local foundation to search for her husband after he did not return home before nightfall. About 20 rescuers and villagers searched for the elderly man for several hours in vain and called off the search late at night.

The body was sent for autopsy at Krabi Hospital.

"Haarlemmermeer" sounds more like the city he came from instead of a last name....

TV never gets it right.

Could well be he slipped but if he made a daily evening walk he would know the environment quiet well which makes it a bit strange he apparently walked so close to the edges. Anyhow as always cased closed for Thai police.

What’s an American Shepard?

Looks like a Shiloh shepherd; American version of the GSD except larger. Judging by the image of owner & dog in the OP.

I was reminded, either way, that my lovely wife and I will visit Hoofddorp this summer.  Looking forward to it.

RIP, Mr Haarlemmermeer.

Poor fellow died in the pond used to make tap water? Eww!

This happened at a reservoir here in Portland, Oregon, USA a few years ago. Guy defecated in the water upon his expiration. The city had to drain and clean the reservoir. Then they improved the fence around the water.

I would be interested to hear the actions taken by Krabi government in response to this tragedy.

In Thailand  there would be  so many other contaminants already it would  hardly matter. The output is "tap water" which  should  never be  mistaken as  "drinking water".
