Drug Addiction Certificate

Hi All

 

Am applying for a long stay visa from Dubai and I can not get a drug addiction certificate from anywhere.

 

One specialist neurology hospital even told me that such a certificate is impossible to produce unless they are given a list of drugs to test for.

 

The Thai Embassy here in Dubai are no help at all so would really appreciate any tips.

What on earth made you think you need a "drug addiction certificate" from a hospital in Dubai?

It's always helpful to know what passport you carry when asking visa questions...  Not as critical, but still helpful is to know what is your residence status in the country where you're applying for a visa?  If that's Dubai, are you a legal resident?

I think I can clarify this, at least. I believe a doctor was being asked to sign off on the standard Thai medical certificate that is required when applying for long term visas (see http://www.thaiconsulatela.org/pdf/medical_certificate.pdf). The certificate has been an idiotic requirement for about 30 years, but you still need to provide it. In Thailand, pretty much any doctor will ask you to stick out your tongue and then just sign it. However, the OP seems to have run into a doctor in Dubai who feels he cannot rule out the possibility that the OP is a drug addict based on an examination and some standard tests. The OP should try another doctor with a more realistic attitude.

I think you could be correct, I recall on my medical certificate something about alcoholism and drug addiction along with elephantitis

If you apply for the long stay visa while in Thailand you shouldn't need the medical certificate at all. I didn't need it. I was going to apply for my retirement visa while still in the US, which would have required the medical certificate and criminal background check. But came here on a tourist visa and applied for my retirement visa and none of that was required.

When people in the US have had trouble getting their regular doctor to sign the medical certificate I have suggested that they try an immigration doctor.  Check to see if Dubai has immigration doctors.  Also, try asking a street-wise taxi driver if he could help you find a cooperative doctor.

Thanks for clarifying what I said. Unlike some other "helpful" people on the forum! I have called around loads of hospitals and doctors and am getting nowhere. As you can imagine, drugs use is a very sensitive topic here in Dubai and I cant find anyone who will help. 

 

Not sure it makes any difference but I am a UK citizen and have lived here for 5 years.

All I can suggest is going to a small private clinic, and asking the doctor to sign off on the medical certificate without highlighting the drug addiction item. Do not phone in advance indicating that there could be a problem. In my experience, large hospitals are paranoid about what might happen if they sign something they should not. A regular doctor in a small private practice is more likely to see this certificate for what it is: a stupid piece of bureaucracy that no one will ever look at again once filed away at the embassy.

Have found a medical clinic that will run a drug screen test and issue a certificate so hopefully should be accepted ant the Embassy

The important thing is that the clinic completes the standard form the embassy asks for. They may also want to test for tertiary syphilis, though most reasonable doctors would be happy to sign off a form of such antiquated diseases on sight.

Sure ... Thailand wants to be sure you are not a leper with elephantiasis in the final stages of death from syphilis. They can only be confident of that if their silly form is signed.

Funny thing, I got mine done by a doctor for 100 baht, without him asking any questions. The week before I told him I suffered from alcoholism, and gave him some AA literature to hand out to his patients.

Which foreign embassy accepts Thai medical certificate for long-term visa? I know in Thailand you can get it done for 100 baht. The question is if the foreign embassy issuing you the visa will accept it.

Mostly, the Thai embassies do seem to accept certificates signed by Thai doctors. There was one recent report where an embassy (forget which one) refused to accept it though.

Good to know. I intend to get one when I am in Pattaya in October for my 2020/2021 O-A visa. Any recommendation for Pattaya?

The certificate is on the website download it

it is an offical form
