North Korea asks U.N. chief to address ship seizure by 'gangster' U.S.

SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea has asked United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to deal with the "illegal" seizure of one of its cargo ships by the United States, state media said on Saturday.

"This act of dispossession has clearly indicated that the United States is indeed a gangster country that does not care at all about international laws," the North Korean ambassador to the United Nations said in a letter sent to Guterres dated Friday, according to North Korea's KCNA news agency.

Pyongyang's protest to the United Nations over the seizure comes amid mounting tensions since a second summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and U.S. President Donald Trump, aimed at bringing about the denuclearisation of the North, broke down in Hanoi in February.

The letter also called for "urgent measures" by Guterres and claimed that Washington infringed the North's sovereignty and violated U.N. charters.

With the denuclearisation talks stalled, North Korea went ahead with more weapons tests this month. The tests were seen as a protest by Kim after Trump rejected his calls for sanctions relief at the Hanoi summit.

North Korea has said the ship seizure violated the spirit of the summit and demanded the return of the vessel without delay.

The U.S. Justice Department said the North Korean cargo ship, known as the "Wise Honest", was seized and impounded to American Samoa. The vessel was accused of illicit coal shipments in violation of sanctions and was first detained by Indonesia in April 2018.

1. Why does the US think it has the right to impose sanctions on whatever nation is NOT the flavor of the month?

2. Why can't the world community figure out a way around US sanctions, which are most often politically motivated, rarely ever imposed for the stated reason, and are draconian and imperial in their ambitions.

3. I thought Trump said he and Kim were in love, and that they had very good communication, a great understanding, and a great relationship.

To quote Trump:

At the signing ceremony, Trump said that it was an "honor" to meet Kim, and asserted that the two countries had developed a "very special bond."

“I think our whole relationship with North Korea and the Korean peninsula is going to be a very different situation than it has in the past,” he said. “We’ve developed a very special bond.”

The summit — the first between a sitting U.S. president and a North Korean leader — was the result of a flurry of diplomatic activity that began in January and picked up in recent weeks as the two countries sought to salvage the prospect for talks after Trump's decision to cancel the meeting.

Trump's comments praising Kim, however, were unusual for a U.S. president. American officials have often avoided speaking warmly about North Korean leaders, because of the country's poor human rights record and ambitious weapons programs. Asked on Tuesday why he is so comfortable calling Kim "talented," Trump credited the young leader with running his country at such a young age. "Well, he is very talented," Trump said. "Anybody that takes over a situation like he did at 26 years of age and is able to run it and run it tough. I don't say he was nice."

"Very few people at that age — you can take one out of ten thousand, probably couldn’t do it."

Not just a USA thing, even if the USA is more active enforcing sanctions.

The United Nations Security Council has imposed (must be unanimous) five rounds of sanctions against North Korea since early 2016, when Pyongyang conducted its fourth nuclear test.

The U.S. Justice Department obtained a sealed seizure warrant for the ship in July 2018. Allegedly, the timing of the complaint seeking the vessel’s forfeiture had nothing to do with the tensions between the two countries. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/09/us/politics/wise-honest-north-korea-ship-seized.html

Best investigate the legal recourse for breaking UN agreed embargoes before making incorrect assumptions.
