Thais: We won't pull rank and will show our license to police.....if we have one

Respondents to a Nida Poll have overwhelmingly said that they would not attempt to pull rank with the police when asked to present their driving licence.

Though it has emerged that almost one third of people don't have one to show in the first place.

The pollsters interviewed 1,251 people aged 15 and up from all social strata. They said their poll was 95% accurate.

The poll came in the wake of the case of a senior judge in the south who was criticized for mentioning who he was and not producing his driving licence at a police stop. He said he knew the police chief.

This ended up with the effective transfer of a junior officer and there was much comment in Thai society about influence peddling - something that many people in Thailand accept as part of being Thai.

Some 88% of Thais polled said they would present their licence without hesitation when asked by the police.

Just less than 11 % said they'd ask why before complying.

More than 98 % said they would never pull rank with the police.

Less than one per cent said they wouldn't ever show a licence to the police or would show their vehicle registration instead.

Some admitted they would pull rank however - 0.81% said yes.

Most people said that trying to influence the police was completely wrong.

Though 17% tempered this by saying that it was a Thai thing and wrong.

Some 16% said it caused considerable problems for the police.

But 6% said it was a natural thing for Thais to do and not really a big deal.

However, amid all the stats came the bottom line - only 68.75% have a license to show in the first place.

And 31.25% have none.

This is just stupid, they'll just pull out their wallets as usual, and the bent officials on both sides will continue to do as they do.

Any more news on the judge down south? Or is the committee set up still deliberating? ????

The thing is the police is interested to see what you have in the other compartment of your wallet those colorful rectangular sheets of papers with numbers on them, and the higher the number the better...

What a load of BS, every Thai who thinks he/she is important, above the law will refuse.

The lower ranking people will just pull out money.

Most places one would be scared to drive without a license, but not Thailand.

shaking down your balls can be painful, give them the license.

Interestingly yesterday on BBC they talked about the 20 most corruput countries Cambodia was number 20 Thailand did not get a mention ????

0.81% – or in other words: the small percentage of people who actually CAN pull rank, WILL pull rank. The rest don't pull rank because they don't have a rank to pull.

Sounds right, 1% the rich and powerful while everyone else gets down on their knees.

About bloody time, no ins if no licence

Very damning !

The fact Thai society is polling and debating such a ridiculous topic is all we need to know about Thai culture.
