Senatorial candidate for Nong Gee district of Thailand’s northeastern province of Buri Ram, Mr. Banchob Namwiset, has become the first post-election politician to be stripped of his voting rights for ten years by the Supreme Court’s Electoral Cases Division.

The Court found the 60-year old government official guilty of offering bribe to another candidate in exchange for her vote, in violation of Article 77 (1) of the Senators’ Election Act.

In the verdict, which was read at the Supreme Court today, Mr. Banchob was found to have called another candidate, in the same professional group, on December 12th last year, offering to recoup her senatorial application fee on the condition that she cast a vote for him.

So bribery and corruption proved, but no punishment?

Hang on a minute, if there is a Senatorial Election Act, there must have been some sort of Senatorial Election. And yet how come all the 250 Senators have been hand picked by the junta leader on behalf of he who must be obeyed?

Yes, only one has been exposed.  All the others haven't been exposed yet

It is good that they have attacked Buri Ram. I would think it would help Bumjathai to make their decision of whom not to join easier.

He must not have been one of "The chosen ones "

Stripped of voting rights.

But does he still  get to sit and fill a Senate seat or  not?

Wait - didn't the junta hand pick the senators?

Neighbours went off to Roi Et on Monday in a van paid for by somebody up for election there. They all got 4k baht for going and voting, 2k from each candidate! Obviously is pays to be in the elected position.

he's not a senator for that senate, he's a candidate for a provincial senate out in the sticks.
