BANGKOK, 4 June 2019 (NNT) - The Prime Minister, Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha, has assigned the Ministry of Commerce to turn the impact of the ongoing trade war between China and the United States into an opportunity for Thai exporters by exploring new markets. He has called on the private sector to further enhance workers’ skills to support trade along the country’s border.

The Deputy Government Spokesman, Lt. Gen. Weerachon Sukhondhapatipak, said Prime Minister Prayut has acknowledged the Thai Chamber of Commerce’s plan to gather opinions and suggestions on education and resource human development from its members nationwide.

Lt. Gen. Weerachon said the Prime Minister supports the idea, and the government recognizes its importance and is ready to provide full support because the private sector is an important mechanism to propel the country’s export and tourism sectors.

Regardless of which political side will form the next government, it will have to cooperate with private firms and listen to their proposals. The next government will have to continue working on major projects, such as the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC), the high-speed rail project linking three major airports, and the double-track railway project.

The Deputy Government Spokesman said the government has been working with the private sector and monitoring the impact of the trade war between China and the US.

The government has assigned the Ministry of Commerce to turn the impact of the trade war situation into an opportunity for Thai exporters by exploring new markets and promoting Thai products with high potential, such as agricultural produce, fruits, seafood, beverages, and cosmetics.

Currently, the US has contacted Thailand about buying processed food due to the US tariff increase on Chinese goods to 25%. The Ministry of Commerce will also hold free trade talks with different countries to create more economic opportunities for Thailand.
