BANGKOK, 8 June 2019 (NNT) - Gen. Prawit Wongsuwan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, welcomed Mr. Pirkka Tapiola, Ambassador of the European Union (EU) to Thailand, on the occasion of his taking office, at the Ministry of Defense.

Both parties discussed the Thai political situation, bilateral cooperation between Thailand and the EU and cooperation in the ASEAN framework. Gen. Prawit confirmed the government’s commitment to sustainable democracy. It is expected that the government will be established shortly. He expressed his hope that Thai-EU relations will be able to fully move forward in the near future, and thanked the EU for supporting Thailand in eliminating IUU fishing at all stages. Gen. Prawit asked him to be confident that Thailand will continue to adhere to sustainable fisheries and prevent IUU fishing. He said Thailand is willing to join forces with the EU to solve IUU fishing problems at the regional level.

The EU Ambassador to Thailand congratulated Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha who has been approved as Prime Minister of the incoming government, and praised Thailand’s success in solving the IUU problem. He said the EU wants to enhance and upgrade cooperation with Thailand in all respects especially security cooperation and it is ready to work closely with Thailand in solving problems.

He congratulated the PM. It's like congratulating a bank robber. How about having the merest regard for the citizens of Thailand who have been cheated by this stitch up masquerading as democracy?

thailand's definition of 'democracy'; total circle jerk

A wonderful example of self-serving hypocrisy, How can a representative of a supposedly democratic economic and political bloc formally "congratulate" someone who came to power through a rigged election and constitution?

The EU's Mr. Tapiola certainly has the job in front of him to try to be courteous to the the Toad.

Perhaps he was not aware that the military stole the country for the second time in 2 years or perhaps simply does not give a shit because of potential economic ventures.

Congratulated him for manipulating Thailand into "Thai-style Democracy".

Star with the big lie, after that its all downhill.

Before I believe too much of the short script above I would like to hear a report from the European side, which could be quite different from this one. If the above is true then shame on the Europeans for choosing such a fawning position but perhaps in a few months time we will hear some strong and even unpopular words about the recent election farce.

So if Thailand continues to do the bidding of the "West" nothing will be said, increase security? guess they mean biometric data which is probably going to be fed into "western" computer systems as the world is slowly being turned into a prison for those on the wrong side of the social divide!

Agreed. The source is nothing but a junta mouthpiece. Anyone remember how they sprung up from nowhere?

Yes, CGW.

And the worst part of it all is that, as Aldous Huxley warned decades ago, people are being conditioned into 'loving their servitude'.

Come on, sheep - quick: line up for your wonderful government-mandated, subcutaneous microchip in your neck. You know it makes sense (Gen. Prayut will surely support and enforce it when the time comes - and you know he is ALWAYS right)!

You do not understand diplomacy. The job of the diplomat is to wrap just about everything in nice words. Even when they are telling you that war is imminant, it will be said in such a nice way that if you were not listening carefully you might miss it. The ability to fawn is an essential skill for the diplomat.

As Churchill once said, diplomacy involves the ability of telling another country to go to hell and having them asking you the way.

You don't imply with your piece that the EU is democratic in any way, do you?

And an ambassador of the EU?

Since when is that autocratic lot a country that can send ambassadors?

This is one of the most ridiculous congratulations this guy will probably live to regret. It's like congratulating the Cambodian PM or even Putin for their honest win in elections.

It was the same for Trump, firstly condemnation, now everybody wants to be seen with him, and are rolling out the carpet, as we have recently witnessed in the UK. you may not like the leaders that are elected, but the wheels of doing business must still continue.

Unbelievable.

Welcome to the new "DEMOCRATIC" government, General Prawit!

Birds of a feather....the EU and the Thai government should get on very well.

The real power in the EU rests with unelected people. Whatever gave you the impression that it's supposedly democratic. The leadership of the EU is as undemocratic as the leadership of Thailand. Brussels is currently "selecting" a new leader to replace Druncker.

No worse than the EU having an Ambassador. What reason? What purpose?

They are neither a state nor a country, they have neither money themselves nor land that they govern. They are locusts!......... They will fit in well with Prawit.

All European countries have their own Embassies, Consulates, and Ambassadors....... ......Why is an EU Ambassador required?

We can only presume these unelected clowns are jockeying for positions with their quest for an EU superstate!

Where's his ' watch gift? ' Are you hiding it in the flowers!....corrupt <deleted>!

At a guess, representing the collective position

EU, self serving useless parasites, will kiss anybodies arse for a bit of attention.

Let's hope this was just the required "courtesy visit" with only the required niceties while both sides really know the unspoken reality.

I thought he returned all the watches?
