US keeps Thailand in Tier 2 on people trafficking

Thailand has maintained its Tier 2 status in the United States’ latest Trafficking in Persons Report, released this month.

Countries whose governments do not meet the minimum standards of the US Trafficking Victims Protection Act but are making “significant” efforts to comply are assigned to Tier 2.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha on Friday expressed satisfaction with the renewed status, saying it showed that Washington recognises Thailand is tackling the issue.

He said his new government would continue to suppress human trafficking in all forms and thanked all agencies and organisations involved in the effort.

Thailand had Tier 3 status in 2014 and 2015, rising to Tier 2 last year.

Tier 3 governments neither meet the minimum standards of the US legislation nor are making significant effort to do so.

If they do this then shouldn't we all get a vote?

You must not have been paying attention. The US has been calling the shots for a long time. However, it won’t last forever.

China will be calling the shots in S.E.Asia sooner than many think.

This US tier status is developed for assessing favored trade status between USA and trading partners. The EU also has a similar ranking (red, yellow and green cards)

Nations have every right to consider how their trading partners behave in the global community when deciding to do business with them.

If not for the threat of an EU red card on Thailand's fishing products, we would not likely have seen the recent actions undertaken by Thailand to correct the deplorable working conditions of migrant fisherman and canning employees. The pressure to continue to have access to their respective markets paved the way for these improvements.

The EU and The USA are well within their rights and responsibilities to access their trading partners business practices.

On May 21st this year BBC report titled-- `Germany sex trafficking: Thai forced prostitution trial begins`.

Quote- `Five people have gone on trial in Germany for allegedly trafficking up to 200 Thai women & forcing them to work in a nationwide network of brothels`.

The accused are 4 Thai women, aged 49, 51, 53 & 60, & a German man, 62. No names given. The trial began in the western town of Hanau on May 21st 2019. There has been no update on this story from either the BBC or Reuters.

I would have thought a story involving so many Thais would get media coverage here in Thailand but apparently no so.

Anyone on this forum know any more on this story?

Prioritized Recommendations (3 out of total 13):

https://www.state.gov/reports/2019-trafficking-in-persons-report-2/thailand/

  • Enforce regular payment of wages, requirements that employers pay recruitment fees of migrant workers, and the rights of employees to retain possession of their own identity and financial documents.
  • Increase potential victims’ access to government services before they are formally identified by multidisciplinary teams.
  • Proactively investigate and prosecute officials allegedly complicit in facilitating trafficking, and convict and punish those found guilty with adequate sentences.

As you read through the recommendations, you might conclude that Thailand will remain in Tier 2 (if not fall backwards) for at least through PM Prayut's term of office.

Research and read that particular US Law. Countries don't have to comply, merely face the consequences of the US legislation. Your lack of education in this instance is noted, as is your veiled distain for the USA.

Why? You don't get a vote in Thailand either.

Yeah ripe from a country (USA) that also has a terrible human rights record. It must be terrible being black in the States these days.

425 lives have been lost by police killing blacks this year alone.

Most don't take any announcement from America serious anyway, they should keep their noses out of other people's business, and be more concerned about home issues, like protecting it's own people which it has failed on all counts, shame shame on you !!!

You should take a closer look at your stats.

425 people have been killed by police this year.  That number includes 85 white people and 56 black people.

I didn't realize that police violence against blacks falls under the definition of human trafficking.
