I have been offered an opportunity to work remotely (from Bangkok) for an organization that is registered in Chiang Mai. Please note that this is NOT a "digital nomad" situation, but rather a Thai organization that only has a base in Chiang Mai and would like to have someone stationed in Bangkok to conduct networking, etc on their behalf.

This being said, I am under the impression that I would need to apply for a visa in the province that they are registered (Chiang Mai), however, this would likely be rejected due to my personal address being in Bangkok. Therefore, are there any ways to circumvent such complications?

I am curious if the organization can state in their invitation letter that I will work from Bangkok, and therefore I could apply for the visa in Bangkok? Are there any regulations about working in a province other than the one that the organization is registered in?

There is another possible approach: the organization is international and therefore also registered abroad. Is there any precedent for receiving a work visa for a company that is registered outside of Thailand on the premise that the work I will be doing is based in Thailand/SEA?

Thank you in advance.

You cannot apply for a visa at immigration here other than a few non immigrant visas that can be issued due to a person qualifying for an extension of stay of some kind near the end of the 90 day permit to stay it allows.

Visa are normally issued at embassies and consulates.

If working different rules apply for applying for a extension of stay based upon working. They are done where you your work permit was issued.

If you were able to get a work permit issued in Chiang Mai you could apply for an extension of stay there.

Thank you for your response.

With this information in mind, let's say I apply for a Non-B Visa from an Embassy/Consulate outside of Thailand. Is there a regulation stating that my address (Bangkok) must match the location of the organization's registration? If so, they would not match and therefore I'm assuming my application would be denied.

However, if I were to successfully receive the Non-B Visa and I would then come back to Thailand and receive a work permit from Chiang Mai. If I continue to work & live in Bangkok, when it comes time for extending the stay on this Non-B Visa, I would need to do that in Chiang Mai. However, in the documentation, my personal address will still be in Bangkok, not Chiang Mai. Will this discrepancy cause any issues?

Is it possible to have Bangkok listed on my work permit (although this organization is not registered in Bangkok)? And if so, would I then be able to process extensions in Bangkok?

Thanks again.

Applying for a non-b visa does not require you to be living where the company is registered or where the work permit is applied for shown on the application approval letter that is needed to apply for it.

Normally you have to apply for the extension in the province where the work permit is located. Exceptions could occur when you are living/working in a province located in a different region of the country.

The regulations for work permits has changed so much in the past couple of years it is hard to predict how it could be done.

The only way to know with any certainty is to have the organization contact the Department Of Employment office in Chiang Mai about your unusual case.
