Thai attempted suicide rates are on the increase

The Thai Department of Mental Health has released disturbing research showing the shockingly high rate of attempted suicides and pointing out the need for better education about depression and coping with stress.

 

The research indicates that about 53,000 Thais attempt suicide each year. That’s an average of more than six attempts per hour. Sadly, 4,000 will succeed in taking their own lives each year. The rate in 2018 was up to 6.11 attempts per hour, up from just 6.03 the year before.

 

The figures also indicate that the suicide rate in men is four times higher than women in Thailand and that the most vulnerable age is 35 for men and between 50-54 for women.

 

The report shows that depression, failed relationships, family issues and substance abuse are high on the list as causes for many of the attempted suicides.

 

Other high risk issues include serious financial problems, sudden loss and grief over loved ones, chronic medical conditions, elderly people worried about becoming a burden, chronic insomnia and people who have previously attempted suicide.

 

In the home, domestic violence, loss of self-control (loss of face) and bouts of alcohol abuse were also contributing factors that may lead to a suicide attempt.

 

The World Health Organisation reports that close to 800 000 people die due to suicide every year, which is one person every 40 seconds.

 

“Suicide is a global phenomenon and occurs throughout the lifespan. There are indications that for each adult who died by suicide there may have been more than 20 others attempting suicide.”

Suicidal is the worst in many levels. People who love you will be sadder than the natural causes.  if we look into it and think about people who love me.

Either Thai's are not very good at suicide...or a whole lot of attention seeking going on.

 

 

The only positive thing about suicide is that you can usually only do it once.

Is that the lowest you can stoop?Surely you can go lower than that if not then your not very good at stooping,or are you just,as you say,seeking attention?

Well let's be honest, Thais are not good at anything (other than the younger females proclivity to carnal pursuits) so why should suicide be any different ?

1.Social media.

2.Reality vs expectations.

3.Lack of a "vision" in life and poor role modelling plus abysmal parenting,drugs and alcohol.

 

I am quite surprised (and suspicious) that the number is not far higher as I personally knew of five Thai suicides in my area.

Quite possibly is higher as this might be the "official number" and reporting maybe skewed for loss of face reasons.

You are, of course, completely right.  The suggestion that very serious mental health problems are nothing more than “attention seeking” just shows his complete ignorance and lack of any understanding and empathy. 

Perhaps if it were harder for Thais to borrow money the sad problem may abate.

6. Social pressure 

7. Debt

 

Some suicides are covered up for various reasons and likely very poor police/forensic skills at determining a suicide.  That

insanity lurks in places like Pattaya, That thai beer accelerates mental illnessand theres nothing else to do in Pattaya but drink drink and more drink.

Men are more 'sucessful' (can't think of a fitting word) at suicide.

 

Try having a little empathy.

You also have a large portion of the population who believe that when they end one life here they move on to another.

 

Poor education and a complete lack of coping skills.

No problem in the failed attempt department, once Thais get on the road or near it, there is almost a 100% mortality rate and for anyone in the vicinity of them.

Attention seeking is usually the first cry for help, if it goes on unnoticed it will generally lead to suicide.

Time for someone to finally deliver "Happiness to all Thais".
