webfact
Tourists flee in all directions as wild elephant comes for a bite to eat! Caption: They fled in all directions Daily News reported that tourists scattered in all directions when a wild elephant showed up at a restaurant connected to the visitor center at the Khao Yai National Park on Sunday. Nobody was hurt and the tourists took many pictures of the unusual daytime visitor. After thirty minutes the pachyderm was persuaded by park staff to slink back into the forest. Park chief Khanchit Srinoppawan said that elephants usually only turn up in this area at night. Picture: Daily News This elephant - aged about 20 - was probably attracted by the smells of the food. He stressed that safety of tourists was a priority. There are 90 CCTV cameras in the park operating 24 hours a day. The visitor center has been damaged in the night by elephants in the past. londonthai
it doesn't look like tourists are fleeing, just standing at distance and taking pictures. Later female park ranger stood in front of ely not more than 5m, and picture from behind also about 5m. because of short tusks it was probably female, they are docile and won't chase. Danger might come from bulls on heat. rangers are armed, against poachers, but they will also have darts for different animals - even it's a national park. That's also for the safety of animals, when injured or seriously sick, to give them medical aid or take to temporary shelter.
