A Chinese man was given the death sentence yesterday for the murder of clothing trader Araya Sapsuwan, 70, in February.

He was also sentenced to a year for stealing from her.

However, Wu Zhouming, 28, had confessed to his crimes and the central criminal court commuted the sentence to 25 and a half years.

He was also ordered to pay the victim's son one million baht in compensation.

Wu knew the victim after doing deals in the garment trade. He went to see her at a condominium in Pahonyothin Soi 52 in the Sai Mai area of Bangkok on the 11th of February this year.

He proposed to borrow 100,000 baht from her and pay back 120,000 baht. When she refused an argument developed in which he strangled the old lady and stole cash and possessions valued at 95,000 baht.

He was arrested in Koh Samui shortly after committing the crime.

Take a life, confess, get a total of 25 years. out at 54 and on your way. Thai way/

in my country (Canada) 1st degree murder is 25 with no parole - confess or not, they stopped stretching peoples necks a long time ago. There has been a few cases of multiple homicides resulting in consecutive vs concurrent sentencing, but they are rare.
