webfact
Four kids - abandoned by mum, dad in prison - help gran sort litter to survive Picture: Thai Rath Thai Rath went to meet a poor grandmother in Chonburi who has to look after the needs of four grandchildren. But she had nothing but praise for the children who she described as responsible and hard working. The same might not be said for their parents - Prajim Charoenmuang, 47, said that her son is doing time in prison and her daughter left her boys with her and never came back. She hasn't been seen in years. The children are sisters Nittacha, 12, and Jaruwan, 10. The brothers are Chatchaphon, 11, and Jirawat aged 6. They attend Wat Taopoon School. They have all been living in a shack with a plastic roof and a bed donated by a neighbor. The posts are some pilings on a bit of land belonging to a contractor. Picture: Thai Rath "The children are great," said Prajim. They help with the housework and after school they help with separating the rubbish I collect into different piles". She said that gets between 100 and 300 baht a day - but it's barely enough for food. "Some days the kids have to go without food," she said. "They accept the situation without complaint". Prajim further praised the children for being responsible about their school work. The eldest gives her money that she won in competitions playing the khim (a Thai instrument) and doing aerobics. But she worries about the future: "Anything could happen to me and that would leave the children with no one to look after them". Picture: Thai Rath She said that recently she had a fainting fit and woke up in hospital. Nittacha said: "I miss my mum. I haven't seen her for two years. My younger sister needs a birth certificate. "I went to the palace in Bangkok and got a cap and a scarf for representing the school as a volunteer," she continued. "But I left them lying around when I was back at school and someone took them," she added. "That was the most important thing in my life". But help is on the way for the family. Former Samet district "kamnan" Winai Phonphaiphan and "phu yai ban" Prakit Napachote went to see her. They have found the family a rental property for six months and gave her 5,000 baht to help with initial expenses. And they have promised her a regular job so that she can adequately support her grandchildren. 4MyEgo
Heart wrenching to hear as I have 4 kids, and they will never go without. I will refrain from Thai bashing as this can happen anywhere in the world, suffice to say the government should look at providing for children, because I know back in Australia, the parents are provided with support, i.e. children under 12 get 100,000 baht per child per year, and children aged 15-19 get 130,000 per child per year, plus rental assistance and supplement payments. The parents don't even need to be working and then they would can also get NewStart or unemployment benefits. Yes Thailand is a developing country, but at the same time the military, I mean democratically elected government should spend on the countries future, i.e. kids and not submarines and tanks to please their egos', I said I wouldn't Thai bash. xtrnuno41
Sadly there are so many stories about kids all over the world in really bad conditions. These kids arent that bad of, it can be worse. some cases , i saw in docu. In Africa, a 8 year old boy, working 12 hours/day , hard labor, carrying bags of at least 12 kg, for a DIME ! No family at all, just trying to survive somehow. India , young girls of age 9 abducted from family, to do prostitution in big cities. Look around and see what happens in the world, it's a crying shame. There are so many sad stories

This money could have been better spent helping people like this grandmother

grumbleweed
A least the billions spent on armoured vehicles will warm their hearts and give them hope that they're gonna be lifted out of poverty anytime soon
Toknarok
It makes me mad reading stories like this. I cannot understand why Thais (it's not only Thailand) why people will gladly pay squillions to religious organisations to build monstrous edifies of ignorance and superstition instead of giving money and help to the needy. In my town alone there is a temple under construction that must have cost billions (yes billions) and it's not even complete yet. Every village is the same people 'making merit' and giving money for the construction of buildings where a few saffron clad lay-abouts can live a life of ease. And don't give me that crap about the needy can always get fed at a wat. All that food is donated, half of it is fed to the dogs anyway. If you want to make merit rather not give your food and money to the needy like this family?

Mikisteel
Fairplay to the kanman Thailand builds parks and forgets to put adequate play areas in for kids. I've been to a lot of parks here and some have just forgotten to put child friendly apparatus altogether but they remember to include the exercise apparatus. Very odd. They give pensions to 60+ but have no provisions for children, the future.
wisperone
Too bad the kids have to suffer. Who knows what the long term affects of abandonment are for these kids. Kudos to the GM got giving them the best care she can. Mother is probably in Pattaya doing her thing. Could at least send some of her earnings home to help feed the kids. Galactus
heart wrenching ???? which mother can left 4 kids and dont see them for 2 years?? we dont call that person a mother! i just cannot get this. respect for the grandma though. and praise for the kids. Thailand is not a poor country! Authorities should help such people in dire situations!!! spend the government money for welfare or people in need, not for some billion dollar submarines and that money goes to China!!! For the first 6 years you can get 500 Baht per child per month, but only if you have a job where you pay into the Social Security system.

Got sucked into a (the?) temple that looks like a big golden tit. Completely full of herself, not selfless like a Mother Theresa. The opposite of what Buddhism is supposed to be about. Are you saying make Thailand a socialist country where no one has to work - only collect a welfare check? They had that up to 1905. Ah the good old days.
