webfact
Pompeo says U.S. doesn't ask Southeast Asians to take sides U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo poses with his ASEAN counterparts for a family photo during the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Bangkok, Thailand August 1, 2019. REUTERS/Jonathan Ernst/Pool BANGKOK (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told Southeast Asian counterparts at a meeting in Bangkok on Thursday that the United States never asked Indo-Pacific nations to take sides. Regional rivalry between the United States and an increasingly powerful China hangs over this week's security meetings between foreign ministers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and world powers. "Look, we don't ever ask any Indo-Pacific nations to choose between countries," Pompeo said at the start of the meeting. "For decades, American diplomacy with ASEAN has been consistently guided by our desire for partnership, our respect for the sovereignty of each of our nations and our shared commitment to the fundamental rules of laws, human rights, and sustainable economic growth," he said in brief remarks. nobodysfriend
Looks like they are having a good time there ... but their political decisions in real life make a lot of people unhappy ... But anyway , what they care about 'people ' , they care about themselves , that's all . I am dreaming about a world that is free of selfish and corrupt politicians . May be Artificial Intelligence , AI , could replace them one day ... I know , it is only a dream ....

This is completely contrary to the way Cambodia and Laos was treated during the Vietnam war. The US invaded and bombed these people back to the stone age without any consideration of sovereignty let alone consultation. The US just did what they wanted irregardless of laws, human rights and sustainable economic growth, unless of course it favoured the US.

Sydebolle
"Look, we don't ever ask any Indo-Pacific nations to choose between countries" Pompeo is obviously not quite aware of the fact, that neither he nor the US has anything to say in this matter. The US' involvement in this part of the world was nothing short of a godforsaken disaster. 45 years later people still get killed in and wounded in i.e. Laos by some of the 2'000'000 tons (2'000'000'000 kilogrammes) of ordnance. 30% did not explode and is waiting for Laotians, Cambodians and Vietnamese - mostly children - in meanwhile second and third generation to get maimed. If they are serious, then come and clean up the mess you so cowardly left behind. Obama was generous enough to arrive in Vientiane some years ago with an USD 90 million "gift" - it was met with great gratitude considering the US' "defense" budget of (then) USD 600 billion - or 0.00015%. The "defense" budget is mind-boggling as the US has been without a war for a mere 16 years since its creation in 1776 - and was not used to fight off invaders from Canada or Mexico! The Chinese have taken over the role of colonialism, previously held by France, in Indochina - they create neo-slaves of mammoth proportions but they do not kill people at random - a distinct difference to Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon. If these countries are left alone, they will sort out their stuff - over time - by themselves. It does not take the planet's possibly poorest country, as far as foreign policy is concerned, to lull the rest of the world in yet another little fairy tale ???? He is the poster child for boot licking sycophants. I watched an interview of him when the "wall" was the hot topic. Interviewer: "But will Mexico pay for the wall?" Pompeo: "The wall will be built." Interviewer: "But who is going to pay for the wall? Mexico like Trump said?" Pompeo: "The wall will be built." repeat ad nauseum.
tonbridgebrit
The simple solution is this. How about both America AND China, carve up South East Asia and share it ? There's no need to fight wars and have confrontation, in order to take over South East Asia. Let's have peace, and the prize will be shared.
