U.S. O/A holder insurance / medicare

Featured Replies

Will an active MEDICARE card  suffice as insurance ?

Or do I need additional coverage?

Thanks in advance.

If any of that is EVER formalized and enforced the obvious answer is absolutely NOT.

Medicare does not cover you in Thailand.

Agree. Just to add...OP, why ask about insurance for OA When it currently is not required. Perhaps never.

You currently don’t need health insurance for a Non O-A.

FYI:

You are covered for 60 days

Medigap coverage outside the U.S.

If you have Medigap Plan C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, M or N, your plan:

  • Covers foreign travel emergency care if it begins during the first 60 days of your trip, and if Medicare doesn't otherwise cover the care.

Medigap coverage outside of the U.S. simply means you could get reimbursed for overseas medical emergency treatment.  You would have to pay for medical services upfront.  Though medical treatment costs less than in the US it can get expensive if it is a true emergency.

It sounds like you are covered for travel but not if you are living here long term. So regardless that an O-A visa doesn't require insurance you will eventually be here long enough that your Medigap won't cover you (I think?). You need to ask about that. I've been here 2 1/2 years and recently bought a Thai insurance policy because my US policy wouldn't cover me as a long term Expat.

Medigap is separate add-on coverage for Medicare and sold by private companies. And as already posted may only provide limited and brief emergency travel coverage.
