August 7, 20196 yr Vet seeks to calm public fears over flea bites By The Nation A veterinarian with the Disease Control Department has sought to calm fears about cat fleas after TV station reported that a school girl had died from a blood infection after being bitten by a flea from her cat. Ratanaporn Tangwangwiwat, a veterinarian with the department, said that there are no medical records of anyone dying from a flea bite. She was commenting on TV report that was also posted on the TV station’s website that a fifth-grade schoolgirl had died after developing a blood infection from a cat flea. The report was widely circulated via online social networks, especially Facebook, leading to concerns that pet cats would be abandoned on streets. Some Facebook users said several cats have already been abandoned. “We don’t want the public to panic and stop keeping dogs and cats because lice and fleas can be eliminated by showering and using a pesticide solution that needs to be applied every month,” Ratanaporn said. She said the department has learned that the girl died of heart inflammation. But she admitted that some people may be allergic to the saliva of fleas and lice and develop rashes two to four hours after being bitten. Some rashes can last for up to two years and if not treated properly may become infected. Each year, approximately 2.7 million dogs and cats are killed every year because shelters are too full and there aren’t enough adoptive homes. If you ask my cat “what you want, let you free or kill you?” My cat will say freedom better. My cat the Buddhist. The Christians on the other thred want to kill the Buddhist soi dog also. Such Christian compassion!!!

In the States for sure they have kill shelters, it is sad. Here the kill shelter is abandoning your pet on the road.

August 7, 20196 yr Hi Yimm just for some balance and perspective please see below. Buddist soi dog vs Buddist Thai man with a sword. Such Compassion. As the truth is all humans do bad things to animals.. You eat meat right? Spend a day watching the slaughter of the animals which feed us and the question your own values when you pick up your favorite dish later in the day. And in some cases animals unwittingly do harm to humans. And with rabies found in over 40 provinces earlier in the year and some deaths.. Managing the soi dog and cat populations has merit.
August 7, 20196 yr I can remember seeing a flea circus when I was a kid seems no one has that patience anymore, plenty of carriers though.

The monk and other people feed them everyday to make merit. Deliscios food. And they can play with the other dogs there. Happy dog. My dog say this much better way than the compassionate Christians way.

I am astounded beyond the fact both your cat and dog are fluent in Thai, that you have a dog (and I assume a cat) that both understand the complex concepts of religion, nationalism, and the socio economic arguments that surround the issues of pet ownership. If I was being cynical, which I am not, I would think that you are super imposing your own Donald Trumpesqe views using your dog and cat as unwitting accomplices. But that would be cynical and cruel of me to think you would do such a thing to your pets. You being a good buddist and all that. I look forward to seeing you pets on Thailands got Talent. Please do not disappoint. Edited August 7, 20196 yr by jonclark

Yet someone from the Disease Control Department here says "there are no medical records of anyone dying from a flea bite". Shows the lack of education by so-called experts. Certainly cats can get the plague (yersinia) and possibly cat fleas can spread it (but not proven). Other diseases you can catch from cats (and possibly there fleas) are murine typhus and borrelia (cat scratch disease). So what the 'expert' is maybe saying you do not die of the flea bite, but the disease that it spreads! It would be interesting to know as to what actual infection the girl died of. Of course, very hard to prove if a flea has spread the disease, unless you can find the flea that bit you ..... and tested it. Edited August 9, 20196 yr by rickudon add more
