Police on Saturday arrested a Japanese man whose story was widely shared early this year when he got his cash back from a taxi driver, on charges of leading a Japanese call centre gang.

Chon Buri Immigration police chief Pol Col Samphan Luangsatjakul led officers from his bureau to join police from the Bang Rak station in arresting [name removed], 30, at his room at the Surawong City Resort in Bangkok’s Bang Rak district.

Samphn said the Chon Buri immigration police earlier arrested 15 Japanese men at a rented house in Tambon Nongprue in Bang Lamung district and charged them with operating a call centre to deceive their compatriots..

Samphan said after the 15 suspects were extradited to Japan, the Japanese authorities sought help from his office to arrest [name removed] who was believed to be the leader of the gang.

Police were able to quickly locate [name removed] because early this year, he dropped a wallet inside a taxi with Bt153,000 in Japanese and Thai bank notes. The taxi driver, who found the wallet, sought help from a police traffic radio station help locate the Japanese man. His story was widely shared after he got his wallet back.
