UK would still have to pay its EU budget bill - Moscovici

PARIS (Reuters) - Britain would still have to honour all its financial obligations made during its membership of the European Union even if a ‘no-deal’ Brexit occurred, said EU Economics Commissioner Pierre Moscovici on Tuesday.

 

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said that if Britain leaves without a deal, it will no longer legally owe the 39 billion pound divorce bill agreed by his predecessor.

 

However, Moscovici said this was not the case.

 

“The British will have to settle their payments, and their financial contributions in all circumstances, regardless of whether there’s a deal or a ‘no-deal’,” Moscovici told Europe 1 radio.

 

“There is no room for discussion on this,” he added.

One of the most pathetic and stupid things I have read. GB 5th richest Country in the world, 4th most powerful military so bitter and twisted. No deal is that, No deal and walk away. Do you have any idea about the EU and if there is a debt to pay then when the books are balanced being only one of 3 net contributor yer on year we have an entitlement to a very large persentage of every asset the EU has. They are now panicking.... October is closing fast and May has gone.... 

The UK does not have to pay One Euro . or one pound 

How to get 7-9 billions from the U.K.? 

One ask initially 30-40 billions. 

When you agree to have dinner together and share the bill in a way you have agreed on then when you walk away after the appetizer, you are still morally obliged to pay for the whole dinner ...

Johnson should panic the EU by asking the Court of International Arbitration to rule on who pays what.

 

The EU might find that they owe us money as the UK could claim against contributions to the EUs assets.

Look , If you ran some kind of business with a partner who leaves without paying what he owes you , and than later would come back to you to do more business with you , what would you do ?

His credibility would be Zero , but if he wants to deal with you again , some way will be found to make him pay what he owes ...

Exactly correct. That is the EU mentallity and problem. A pity some of the bar stool proppers don't take more time out, more water with it and read about the whole issue!!!

The only tiny problem with your extension of the analogy is that it's invalid. No such inflation of expenses has followed the British decision to exit.

I say we let this go to international arbitration. As terryw said, the UK could well have a legitimate claim to a lot of EU assets that it helped fund over the years. 39 Billion is just an arbitrary number that Remainer May and Barnier dreamt up over dinner a couple of years ago and bears no relation to reality i.e. the amount legally owed in either direction.

 

We've seen that the EU is incapable of sensible negotiation so let the courts decide.

 If the above is correct, then why wasn't it brought up during the negotiations for the "divorce bill" ???  Why was the bill agreed too? was the bill agreement contingent to a deal acceptable to the UK?

It was the government's lawyers that calculated 7-9 Billion. Which is actually very close to the figure I estimated about 6 months ago. That's before we account for any EU assets the UK might have claim to.

The whole negotiation was a joke, a farce.

 

The Remainer Theresa May agreeing to the amount of 39 Billion before she knew what she was getting for the money. The equivalent of going to a second hand car showroom and agreeing the price with Arthur Daley before you've even seen what cars he has on the showroom floor. Utterly ridiculous. What a clown.

 You guys should not had let her do the negotiations all on her own. You should have had, forensic accountants, lawyers, prime minister of foreign affairs, etc etc.

Letting a woman negotiate money, all on her own?

or at the very least have a parliament vote on the agreement

I wonder how much all those EU buildings and offices are worth. sadly like the rest of the EU and transparency when it comes to finance is non existent.  I would imagine that the UK is owed quite a lot from this so called divorce.

 

The mindset of remainers is that the UK should pay for everything and get nothing back. That is not a divorce it is called extortion.

Correct, however it doesn't affect nobody personally.

It is one of those things which are there.

Same as what we paid, to have a King and his big family in Belgium, they are there, we all pay for them, but no man in the street know what they really do with their received money.

It seems they have a yacht and properties here and there.

 

Now of course it is possible that British people are different, and that the man in the street knows perfectly what happens with his taxes.

 

However not sure if he or we can do something about it, if he/we may not like what the money is used for.
