Thailand bans Cambodian corn imports

Featured Replies

Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce last week announced a ban on field corn imports coming through Ban Khao Din, in the border with Cambodia. The ban comes into effect on Saturday.

The move was announced after a ministry meeting last week, according to Thai media reports. Ban Khao Din is an international border gate in Thailand’s Sa Kaeo province, which borders Battambang province.

In a statement, the ministry said the import ban will protect Thai farmers from potentially contaminated Cambodian goods, adding that Thailand produces enough corn to satisfy local demand. “Starting the end of this month, imports of field corn will no longer be allowed through the border crossing with Cambodia,” the ministry said.

Next week: "Street vendor complain of 100% corn price increase."

Potentially contaminated corn????? Cutting off imports, cheaper imports to protect own farmers crops livelihood. I can understand this in u certain times, drought etc. But it will result in higher prices yet again.

sounds like the trumpster is running the place now.

Is it legal to make up an excuse to stop a fellow member of ASEAN from exporting food?

Its not really an excuse, these things are widely believed by the general population. the cambodians and thais and the other countries in the region really do think that things made or grown in their own countries are very different from and superior to the other countries, they even think diseases and the medicine used are totally different. they pretty much think they are a separate species and the food they grow are separate species. its part of only being able to understand one language and having no education. nationalism is a much stronger superstition then religion

Just not a high enough selling price because of domestic surplus.

Rather than allow cheap corn imports for the Thai consumer, the Thai government this month finalized five key crops to receive price guarantees including corn.

The basic objective of the ASEAN cooperation in food, agriculture and forestry is to formulate and implement regional cooperation activities to enhance the international competitiveness of ASEAN's food, agriculture and forestry products as well as further strengthen the food security arrangement in the region.

"One Vision, One Identity, One Community."

Good luck with that as Thailand turns inward.
