Harald Link

The Thai Chamber of Commerce has marshalled its network of all 120,000 organisation members across Thailand to help solve the problem of plastic and food waste as part of its Circular Economy policy.

It will also join forces with related state and private organisations to tackle the predicament.

Harald Link, chairman of the chamber’s Circular Economy steering committee, said on Thursday that the chamber has been aware of the negative environmental impact stemming from waste from the industrial, service and farm sectors.

The chamber has also asked the Thailand Development Research Institute (TDRI) to study the source of marine trash and how to solve this problem.

TDRI president Somkiat Tangkitvanich said the major origins of marine waste in the country’s seas include communities and shops near rivers and shores, beach tourism, and poorly managed landfills. Fishing boats are also contributing to the problem.

Most of the trash are plastic bags and foam boxes.

He said the government should declare the combating of waste a national agenda.

It should also charge the public for using plastic bags and launch campaigns to reduce the use of plastic.

Walk along the Chao Phraya river in Bangkok and watch all the trash, foam and plastics floating in it. Eventually it all goes into the Gulf of Thailand. It will take a long time before people can't throw it or to change their behavior.

100 years, minimum.

This financial institution and the rest can begin by ending the ''ordering take out for lunch'' each meal comes in its own huge Styrofoam container and they arrive at lunch time by the truck loads....absolutely no need for that day after day......put your money where your mouth is...litter ally

I always enjoy hearing billionaires (US$) like Harald Link sit there pontificating about what needs to be done about waste management and then instructing the government and others to go out and fix the problem.

One only has to look at the island resorts that have been turned into garbage dumps to know that his pretentious Circular Economy concept will achieve nothing.

Plastic is evil it all needs to be banned...Except we would have to get rid of.........Well........Just about every thing....

way past pull date for them to "put your money where your mouth is"

The problem is Thailands woefully inadequate waste collection and processing services, which sees most things going into landfill sights or just being dumped.

That coupled to Thailands love affair with everything plastic or foam and lack of education as to what to do with it after usage is a huge contributing factor.

Governors should get waste disposal high on the agenda of issues to tackle & it should become an education programme at every school to educate the up-coming generations as to the damage it can cause & possible alternatives !
