yeah.

as an American I would say spend three months in the Philippines and then come to Thailand.

then decide for yourself. you will know after about three weeks in Thailand where you want to retire.

also consider spending 50% in each country if you are free and it is your decision when to change countries.

also look into Vietnam. very big now.

also make sure you have a return to the USA plan because SEA is changing very fast.

if you go to a casino in Cambodia and lose money and can't pay, the Chinese will kill you.

they have a sign on the wall.

sounds like you really should just do all the things in your post and see how it works out for you.

Thailand was a great country when I came here 14 years ago, I think the OP should give Thailand a miss now as retirees are treated like criminals with all the reporting nonsense, and tourists are also treated abismally.

Spent a total of 25 years here in Thailand, mostly in Bangkok but last 5 in ChiangMai plus one year in Nakorn Panom on the Mekong River in 1973, broken tours 1976-79 bkk, 1997-2000, bkk, 2003-2005 bkk, 2014-present in C/M.  I also spent 7 years in the Philippines, in Manila and Cebu.  I am partial to Thailand in that there are no real storms like the typhoons in the philiippines, no strong earthquakes in thailand unlike up to 9's in the philippines, no volcanos erupting in thailand unlike philippines (I was in manila for pinatubo distant about 50 miles).  I really enjoyed the Philippines as an avid scuba diver since the water there was as clear as drinking water.  Did a advanced diver certification north of Olongapo (subic bay) and at 140 ft the moon was crystal clear.  All kinds of former warships for dives, virgin reefs, sea life unbelievable - a photographer from US said she gets paid to dive the Red sea for sea life but pays her own way to dive the philippines because there is much more sea life.  Philippines consists of 7000+ islands some with pure white sand, some with pink (crushed coral) beaches.   Near many dive spots are "hot" spots on the nearby beaches...after diving in the tropical waters (never really cold water but cool) one can scrape a hole in the sand on the beach near the water and when it fills with water it is heated by underground heat - really neat.  I played a lot of golf in the philippines and loved it.  Played even more in Thailand and loved it!  Used to be really cheap but now Asian golfers can now charter a plane and come stay in Thailand for the golf cheaper than golf is in their country so the cost has increased but some cheaper at times.  Female caddies are prevailent in Thailand but philippines a lot of male caddies.  I speak Thai well enough to go anywhere and chat with any local so have no problems with their shyness keeping them distant at times.  English of course in Philippines but I spoke Tagalog when I was there but found one could go anywhere and find English being taught in schools.  Food definitely is better in Thailand and local food is cheaper.  Much filipino food is a combination of Spanish and local mixed together.  Some dishes of course are edible.  If I was single, and recently retired (now 72) and had a choice, I would probably take the Philippines due to the scuba diving.  I outgrew the bar runs many years ago.  I never was a big drinker, having a couple of beers at most and about 25 years ago, that just gave me headaches so I dropped alcohol from my diet.  Travel among the islands in the philippines can really be pleasant with varied sights.  Thailand's culture is entirely different and it can sometimes be easy to offend them if one isn't familiar with those customs.  Thais are Buddhist for the most part while philippines is Catholic.  Education wise, almost every filipino graduates and to even work at MCDonalds used to require a college degree.  Many US doctors go to medical school in the philippines.  Now that I avoid beaches due to heat and polluted waters I avoid those.  The waters around Pattaya were tested as polluted by US doctors 50 years ago and it hasn't improved as far as I know.  But I do love Thailand even with their horrible drivers, too many motorcyclists without any training, horrendous traffic jams ...read once that there are 13+million vehicles registered in BKK but roads suitable for only 9+million cars.  More motorcycles than cars and most don't have a clue about driving safely.   You have a better idea of what you are looking for, both countries provide very much enjoyment no matter what one likes!  Hope this wasn't too long!

You think Subic Bay has closed ? Where have you been? The US base closed in 1992 and the area has been going down hill since. I agree with your description of Phillippines very 3rd world feel and true about armed guards at malls and even McDonalds with either shot guns or auto-matic weapos. Fine for those with not a lot of money who like cheap sex, girls, beer and don't mind bland phill food. Nice beaches in some areas with good diving but a lot of brownouts (electric problems ) and internet is spotty. If you have money don't flaunt that fact or you may join the ranks of those that have been kidnapped for ransome.

I visited Dumaguete and surroundings including beautiful villages and secluded beaches. I enjoyed the visit but couldn't picture living there. But the only way to tell what works for you is to visit yourself.

What I am finding out about this forum is it is like the rest, get no information only smart ass replies.

Here is some Spinach for you then.

Lets look at the similarities:

1.  Both countries have cheap booze and willing third world young women who will ignore your mounds of sweaty, jiggling and repulsive flesh and do unspeakable things to you for a mere pittance compared to the overpriced CrackHos you wallow with at cheap motels on Boulder Highway.

2. Both countries have people that are hideously poor.

3. Both countries have unbeleivable natural beauty that is tempered with the filth and garbage generated by poor Asians.

4. The roads and traffic suck.

5. Both countries are cheap compared to what you are used to as long as you don't have a car.. Ill leave the true pedants to calculate percentages and exchange rates on a beer at 7-11.

6. Both countries have corrupt police forces. However, both countries are very USA friendly, both as governmental policy and by way of the man on the street.

7. Both countries are overrun by stupid, clueless tourists.

8. Both countries are extremely religious.

Now the differences:

1. The level of English is better in the Phils.

2. The visa rules are easier in the Phils.

3. The Phils are Catholic with an Asian-Spanish cultural fusion that to a great extent, resembles Mexico. The Thais are Buddhists with their own cultural world.

4. The level of technological development and infrastructure is higher in Thailand.

5. Americans are "less safe" in the Phils.

6. The flights are longer to the Phils.

7. Thai food is generally conceded to be better that Phil food, although on the street, noodles are noodles.

8. If you are a pinky pointing sjw coastal leftyfascist who loves a glass of that lovely 2018 Chateau FussyPussy you arent going to be happpy at the prices for permium booze in either country. Same if you are one of those beer snobs like your little cousins, the Poms. However, if you are a good old Budpisser drinking American with a booze palate like a Pongo, you will be able to drink yourself to death in either venue for a reasonable price.

9. Medical care is far better in Thailand, although you can get VA/Tricare in Manila.

 Good luck in your choice

Is there something that confuses you OP? Can I clarify basic facts or make them simpler?

I think the OP did a pretty good and fair job of summarizing some of the various topic differences between the PH and TH....  The one area he didn't mention was medical care, where Thailand clearly holds a considerable advantage.

Especially as the people involved get older, I think the medical care issue for the PH would be one of the main reasons I wouldn't seriously consider that country as a retirement destination for Americans.

As for this thread, somehow though, it's not tremendously surprising to find more pro-TH sentiments in a TH-based forum, and likewise, you'd find pretty much the opposite prevailing opinion in the PH-based forums on members' preferences between the two countries.

I like your post.  I been to Thailand 14 times, never the PI yet.  But several of my friends here in the USA have filipina wives and go to the PI frequently, own property there etc.  I echo many of your sentiments.  To me Thailand still looks like Asia.  I love the buddhist temples and some of the architecture.  To me the PI has none of that.  I don't care about either religion much but do prefer some of the basic tenets of Buddhism.  Hard to beat the ease and convenience of a city like Pattaya where you can hop on a baht bus or walk to just about anything you need. But if actually living there, things may seem a bit cloistered versus if one were just visiting for a few months at a time as I do.   I may go with my buddy and his wife to the PI this December.  Depends on if I resign from work or not.  It is a coin flip at the moment

Good luck with your investigations. FWIW 2 thoughts/suggestions.

1) if & when you decide to move, rent for 1 or 2 years first, just Incase you change your mind.

2) living somewhere full-time without a ‘plan B’ is far different than visiting somewhere for 3/6 months then going ‘home’.

Good luck.

I couldn't start to debate this mindless dribble. It should have been deleted as it's a rather extreme case of cultural hatred, but nevermind, I'll bite.

You don't even know the name of the Philippine President, yet make assessments of their education levels, personality and culture (in an extremely insulting manner), pretending to be the smart one. I would say the average Filipino has more personality and education than you do. If you ever did go there, you must have spent most of your time there with a blindfold on, or rolling blind drunk in some seedy backstreet bars. You're the one who claims that prostitutes are not prostitutes, so you obviously have difficulty distinguishing a decent girl from a hooker and never had any experience with the former. Did you personally pay to have sex with virgins, or did some mates tell you what they cost over beer?

Lastly, you've included in your outburst a bashing of American, Spanish and Chinese cultures too (and even added Russia into the mix and did some gay bashing while you were at it - well done!). You call them a "terrible cultural hand" dealt upon the Philippines. Which incredible culture do you come from?... because if it's so great, it didn't rub off on you. To gain any semblance of decent culture you have a lot of work to do. Banging virgins in poor SE Asians nations is not a good start. Did you try virgins in both countries or perhaps some other countries too?

Anyone know if Cubi Point is still there? It is/was the sub base a short way from Subic/Olongapo. Watched most of that video but that guy is really boring. Was wondering what the exchange rate is. By that I mean, would you get more Pesos taking Baht from here or trading it for USD 1st? A lot of Filipinos coming here for work to send it back there.

The Las Vegas shooter had a Filipino wife. Do you think Filipino women cause more mental instability than Thai women do?

I know there will never be a US military base here but what about reopening any of the 3 that used to be in the Philippines? Would that cause a dramatic shift in the exchange rates as more USD would flow into the PI? After president Trump finishes with XI in China, will the Chinese influence of currency manipulation revert to some degree here?

Are there NO grocery stores in the PI like here where you could just buy and cook your own food? Used to love San Migel beer. Head and shoulders above the swill they brew here in Thailand.

OP, a couple of thoughts

  1. Housing is MUCH more expensive (to rent) in Philippines (as are like-4-like hotels), similar rules to Thailand re: being able to buy land/houses (i.e. you can only buy Condos)
  2. If by "Cheaper Visas" you're referring to the practice of turning up on visa exempt & continually extending it up to 3 years, doing a border run and then starting again then the Philippines Bureau of Immigration is already looking to reduce the length of time that people can stay on Visa upon Arrival... https://www.gmanetwork.com/news/news/nation/705806/bi-recommends-non-extendable-30-day-visas-upon-arrival/story so I would look at getting an SRRV (min $10,000 USD in the Bank) or have a plan B if they do the same with Visa exempts

I love the Philippines, have visited > 30 times  & used to have a house 2 hours north of Davao City, but when choosing a place to retire felt Thailand was overall the better option, however as my retirement date nears (4 months & counting) I find myself looking more & more at places like Vietnam, Portugal & Colombia so plan to take extended holidays in each place to see which I prefer.

Oh & this doesn't matter to you as you're from the US, but anybody from the UK would continue to get their State Pension increases in Philippines, it's frozen in Thailand.

Plenty of restaurants, bars, cafes and nightclubs run by those nationalities to choose from.

It really depends on your needs.

If you don't mind difficult visa applications, frequent immigration reporting, Buddhism, difficult to communicate in English, ladyboys etc then Thailand is for you.

If not, it's better to go to Philippines! If you don't like Filipino street food, there's always western fast food there like KFC, McDonald. Many people in Thailand get sick of eating rice everyday anyway.

You'll be able to drink yourself to death for less in the Philippines.

This bottle of San Miguel Gin from 7-11/BizMart was 60 Pesos and it was pretty good too, the tonic cost more than the gin. (Barretto Beach in the background)
