Bangkok World Snooker: Veteran Jimmy White through to last 16 but Thailand's Thepchaiya and Tong are out

Day three action at the Six Red World Snooker Championship in Bangkok on Wednesday saw crowd favorite Jimmy White from England win 5-1 against Mohamed Khairy of Egypt to enter the last 16. 

 

But Thai veteran Ratchapol Pu-Ob-Om or "Tong" was knocked out after a 1-5 defeat to China's Yan Bingtao. 

 

In a tense afternoon match former world champion Graeme Dott of Scotland prevailed 5-2 over Thepchaiya Un-nooh sending Thailand's main hope crashing out in the first round of round robin matches. 

 

Thepchaiya scored a "mini-maximum" of 75 in frame three but Dott responded with a 70 of his own to tie the scores at 2-2. In an error strewn match it was the Scot who made the last 16 in front of a tense and packed crowd at the BCC Hall at Central Plaza Lat Prao.

Action continues on Thursday with the last 16 round matches held over two sessions at 11 am and 2 pm. Entrance is 200 baht at the door for the whole day.

 

Thursday evening at 6.30 pm will see the four quarter finals.

 

The semi finals are on Friday at 3 pm and 6.30 pm. 

 

Saturday will see a special exhibition match between Tong and seven times champion of the world Stephen Hendry of Scotland who is visiting Bangkok. 

 

In their heyday the pair played a 15-red world ranking final in the Thai capital almost three decades ago in which the Scot was crowned champion. 

 

The final this week will be held over 15 frames starting at 2.30 pm on Saturday afternoon at the BCC Hall. Entry is 300 baht at the weekend.

Always liked Jimmy White as he's a great character in a sport that often lacks player personality. Alex Higgins was the same too and I really enjoyed watching both of these guys play.

Darts  Snooker and Boxing were all so much better in those days. We watched the Steve Davis v Hurricane Higgins on the telly at the pub.

Jimmy won't know whether to laugh or cry. While he's busy in Bangkok it is keeping him away from his beloved Pattaya.
