Ganesh pops into Bang Saen beach as lottery fever grips the town!

A yam (spicy salad) vendor thought she saw a child playing at the water's edge on the popular Bang Saen beach in Chonburi.

But when 60 year old Wiphada Phuangpho looked again she could barely believe her eyes - it was not a child but a resin coated figure of Ganesh.

This is the elephant headed Hindu god of beginnings known in Thai as "Phra Phikhanet".

More mystery was to come. Two people attempted to bring it out of the waves but they couldn't lift it.

Permission clearly had not been sought so a prayer was said - hey presto! Now just one person could lift it.

A temporary shrine was set up before it was moved to the tourist center so that those who want lottery numbers could pay their respects.

77kaoded reported that a lot of lottery ticket vendors had gathered to service customers convinced that a win was theirs in the next draw.

Wiphada said that this was the second time a Ganesh figure had been washed up on the beach in recent years.

It always amuses me that gambling is banned in Thailand to the point of breaking up geriatric bridge games at gunpoint.  But lottery - that well known game of skill - is promoted and encouraged among the entire population.  ????

Like he who could pull the sword from the stone.

The Hindu festival of Ganesh Chaturthi has just ended, after 10 days of worshipping the idol in their homes or colonies etc, the idol is immersed in the sea or flowing water. More than likely an Indian family immersed the idol in the sea.

The nose knows

Biggles the flying pig will later put in an appearance if Ganesh doesn't shift all the lottery tickets in time????

Of course it is, Lucrative gambling outlets are the preserve of governments, And only governments are entitled to empty the pockets of the populace with complete impunity, and to ensure there is no competition you simply ban any other aspect of gambling
