Todd Phillips has come out swinging in defense of his new film Joker, amid fears its depiction of a depraved murderer could incite real-life violence.

In an interview with The Wrap, which took place on September 20 and was  published on Wednesday, the director scoffed at such suggestions, saying he believes people are simply searching for something to be angry about as 'outrage has become a commodity' in American society.

'I think it's something that has been a commodity for a while,' Phillips mused during his chat with the publication.

Joker - a psychological thriller that traces the origins of Batman's nemesis as he becomes a depraved killer - is set for national release on October 4.

...makes me want to dig up a copy of Clockwork Orange again!

promoters working with law enforcement now?

Of course these films promote violence just as violent video games to the same.  If we weren't affected and influenced by what we see and hear on the screen to you think we would have the billion dollar advertising industry.  This director is full of it.

After watching Wolf Creek I,m surprised that ANYONE even considers going to Australia ! but it,s all just movies, guys ????

The reality is that America is in love with blood, guts, mayhem and violence. So, criticize the film all you want. This is what they want to see. If they are not watching WWF, Reality TV, or soap operas, they want to see violence. That is just the society that America is today.

Yeah no other country loves the violent American movies.????????????????????????

Just like the John Wick franchise makes more money over seas than it does in America, where box office receipts keep dropping due to the American public not payong attention to the <deleted> the Hollylefties put out.

But dont let the facts get in the way of your usual diatribe. Damn WWF loving deplorable Americans are sooooo disgusting arent they? You would think they would be better off sipping Proseco and listening to Buxtehude like us educated elites. Maybe after we take away their guns we can control what they watch too.

ON the other hand...bread and circuses!

true as is much of the world but one must ask who is controlling the content the viewer or the provider... I don't think it's as clear cut as just blaming the viewer...

True. But that does not change the fact that America does seem like a rather blood thirsty nation.
