Ministry lifts ban on foreigners filling jobs in the informal sector

Featured Replies

The Labour Ministry has revoked its recent ban on foreign nationals from working as taxi drivers, street vendors and a handful of other jobs in the informal sector. Labour Minister Ith Samheng in a statement on Saturday said the ban issued in August no longer applies and it was business as usual for those who were affected.

“[The lifting of the ban] is due to a demand for foreign expertise in the service sector and in order to encourage investment to Cambodia,” he said. “Because of this, the ministry has decided to allow foreign nationals to be employed in any industry and also to be self-employed.”

In August, Mr Samheng issued the directive banning foreigners from doing some jobs, including being tuk-tuk drivers, truck drivers, barbers, masseuses, hairdressers, goldsmiths, shoe shiners, traditional instrument sellers, Buddha statue sellers, souvenir sellers and mechanics.

Wrong country but one could pursue the dream of driving a taxi or massaging people in Cambodia.

Joy is upon us.

Funny how Cambodia who is seen as inferior by Thailand has more brains than superior Thailand and able to reverse damaging laws in order to move forward. While superior Thailand takes 1 step forward then 3 steps back and puzzled why it has not moved forward

Only if you believe that Pattaya is in Cambodia.

In Cambodia the Chinese have all the decent jobs anyway

Genius and pure gold, thank you for your super sleuth post.

It looks like there will now be a big move from Thailand to Cambodia now because many of those on Thai Visa will be able to get work there as a masseuse doing what they have always done, but now instead of only giving themselves the happy endings they will be able to give others a happy ending.
