JAG
I am reminded of the story of the fellow sitting in casualty, escorted by a policeman, with dramatic and bloody if not life threatening facial injuries. "What happened to you?" asked the doctor. "I was involved in a ram raid." "Well, your face is a mess" "You should see the state of the bloke driving the moped!"

If you go to Koh Tao, take a boat trip in Phuket, or live in a high rise building in Pattaya then you're as good as dead! I agree with you. The Thai tourism engine (and regular, average Thais all over the country) conspire to avoid the hard truth that Thailand is not nearly as safe as they pretend. Ask a Thai of any description about crime here, and he/she will mostly likely avoid any negative realities. Ask a Londoner, and you'll most likely get something much closer to the truth. This is difference between reality and disclosure is what makes Thailand so dangerous. 2

CygnusX1
I own a pair of pickpocket proof pants. The manufacturer has a web page showing testimonials from customers who thwarted attempts at pickpocketing. Of a total of 153, 29 were from Paris, 26 from Rome and 15 from Barcelona, plus more in other cities in those countries. Just 1 was in Thailand (Chiang Mai). Based on that, I’d say that Thailand is way safer than several first world European countries.

ta158
what is up with the comments on crime news on thai Visa news saying " Thailand is becoming like Europe/the west" "this is new type of crime" "Thailand is safe and little violence" (based on what they have seen) " this _ European city/country is worse" 1. Thailand has always have had problems with bag/gold/phone snatchings. 2. Thailand has always had violence and murders. 3. Thailand has more murders and shootings than Germany, france,uk,Spain, Italy togheter 4. Most shootings, murders, stabbings, robberies does not make it to English news such as Bangkok post and thai visa news, and same case where robberies and other crimes does not even make it to news in thai. 5. Some say Thailand is dangerous or very dangerous, it has its downsides but compared to real dangerous places like Brazil,Mexico, south Africa, USA, Thailand is safe. Isnt It just easier to compare murder rates, gun violence, violence against tourists etc, try searching tourist shot in thailand or tourists stabbed in Thailand VS tourists stabbed in Paris, Barcelona etc 1

In this day and age, with smart phones, face time, instachat or whatever, I would not be surprised that x number of people are just lurking out there ready to notify their accomplices if they see an opportunity. If It was an intent to make a serious comment about ‘the robber is probably arrested’, you really should learn the way of Thailand and the police actions. The police will do very little, if anything to even try to find this criminal as it would mean that they have to get up and do some police work to find him/her. However, now that it’s been made public aware and on social media, maybe, just maybe, they might look in to it. Same in the UK - police have no time or given the resources to address petty crime - they just do the admin for insurance claims.

Most robberies and other crimes does not even make it to thai news.. And your mouth and fingers stroking your keyboard seemed to run faster than your brain. Just one example. One of my Thai friends in CM about 13 years ago had her purse snagged from her while riding her motorcycle to work in the morning, and she wrecked. Got some road rash and was shaken up. Was a normal occurrence back then, and it just happened recently to one of my wife's acquaintances. But it is less prevalent up here now.. Snag and run is not new and Pattaya is the Capital on the Gold snag and run via motorcycle rider. Otherwise it is being accosted by a team of Lady boys.. But it seems like the snag at table and then running is a bit new. Did you see the video that me and another poster are referring to??? Have you ever had something stolen in Thailand or just like to run your opinions without basis? I have! With your comments you probably will not make a lot of allies here on TV. You are probably not all knowing and seeing, and most of us LONG timers know the real for what is going on. Oh, and BTW, Seems to me you are the new in Thailand. 1

It is more of a tacky East European style, or people who come from poor backgrounds, got hold of some money, and now feel the need to display it. Zero class. Walking around a third-world country with a year's wages in the form of a gold necklace around your neck is sheer stupidity and, yet, I see it all the time. It never makes the wearer seem classy, just dumb. On 10/8/2019 at 5:42 AM, Terek said: not normal is crime. And, yet, it is a universal reality.
