Biometrics? What biometrics?!; serial fraudster slips off to Hong Kong

Thai cation: He fled on a flight to Hong Kong

Immigration chief Lt-Gen Sompong Chingduang has been obliged to admit that a serial fraudster has slipped through his fingers.

He has blamed the fugitive's constant name changing for his escape.

For once no one was singing the praises of immigration's two billion baht biometrics system.

In fact Sanook did not mention the much vaunted system once in their report.

Thananat Siripiyaporn or "Sia Top" was wanted for conning a Buriram "pretty" into marriage and leaving 3.5 million baht in wedding debts.

But "Big Oud" Sompong told the press yesterday that he had left for Hong Kong via Suvarnabhumi airport on flight CX 616 (Cathay Pacific) at 6.35 am.

He said he would be able to stay in Hong Kong for 30 days and did not know what his movements were likely to be after that. He may attempt to re-enter Thailand or go onto a third country.

He admitted that he had not come up on the immigration radar because he had changed his name so frequently after being involved in multiple cases.

Many stories in the press have praised Thailand's biometrics system that began operations this year.

You can only take out what is already input into the system !!

If this guy has not left and/or entered Thailand since the new system started operating then his details won't be on the database will they ?

Do they imagine that it doubles as a crystal ball as well :stoner:

I think Thais have their fingerprints taken when applying for passport.

No system is bullet proof, but it does a good work. They will catch him next time, because the fool is probably dumb enough to come back.

He probably used fake hands with fake fingerprints...

Gotta blame someone..

Many stories in the press have praised Thailand's biometrics system that began operations this year.

Many biased stories maybe fake news from IMO's to offset an embarrassing purchase that doesnt do what they thought it would.

The lowest airfares in the world is on Hong Kong now due to the protests.  He can go anywhere.

Are the two systems linked ?

Biometrics only works for foreigners, everyone knows that.

You'd think that a bio-metric system was installed at the passport issuing centre before or at the same time as the airports ?

Systems have to be integrated, this takes time and money. The information has to be entered into the system to be retrievable

System only new, and his passport may well be issued long before the system launched

What is the procedure for a Thai to change his name and get a new passport with the new name?
