I can understand where the Op is coming from - but please remember a few things:

1. Is it legal? Ask 10 Thais working in 10 Government departments and you will get the full range of answers - from yes to maybe to no. Pick the answer you like best - but make sure you get your answer in writing.

2. Will it help you or escalate the situation? You are a foreigner in a foreign land. If you are threatened, having (and using) pepper spray or a stun gun may help you initially - but be prepared for the situation to escalate. The other person(s) may have a gun or nearby friends prepared to back them up.

3. What are the alternatives? I always use one of 3 F words - Flight / Flow / Fight. By that I mean - first option - run. Second option - go with the Flow. Sometimes it is easier to hand over what your assailant wants. Finally - when all else fails - defend yourself.
