Customs revenue soars on BMWs, Bentleys

Imports of high-end cars such as BMWs, Bentleys and Mercedes-Benzes have increased dramatically judging by the amount of customs fees being remitted, an official in Customs Control Development said this week.

Principal adviser Chaiyut Kumkun said BMW and Bentley have this year paid 102.9 per cent more than in the previous year, while Mercedes-Benz was spending 1.8 per cent more.

“We found that imports of expensive cars slowed in 2018 after the Department of Special Investigation began examining the trade and Customs considered additional taxes,” Chaiyut said. “The new taxes were announced this year, but the import business is active again to meet high demand in this country.”

Car imports generated more Customs revenue this year than any other sector, he said. Tax collected on passenger cars was Bt1.28 billion, a 30-per-cent increase over 2018, car parts brought in another Bt8.16 billion, and buses Bt2.1 billion.

With Bt108 billion collected in 2019, Customs’ target for 2020 is Bt111 billion.

Hardly a sin but interesting to note local car sales are tanking while luxury imports are booming

Great Train Robbery??

Think about it.????????

Good. With consideration to the extra revenue generated in the new taxes, how about decreasing fees on all the "O" visas ? :whistling:

Oh ya, they have probably found another way to circumvent the custom men, or a friendlier and 'more receptive and understanding' custom man to do business with...

Being that about 80% of the cost of these luxury cars is tax, a 50 million baht Rolls will have 40 million in taxes. A 25 million baht Ferrari will have 20 million in taxes.  Porsche 911...12 million in taxes.

Do the math and you’ll see that the 102% increase in Bentley taxes paid is probably an increase from ONE car to TWO cars sold year over year.

Big whoop.

Why isn't there a graphics board and finger pointing for this to help us understand?

1% of the population owning two thirds of the wealth might not be a sin but probably a recipe for trouble sooner or later.

Way it's going, these cars will be as expensive as a box of Alpen soon

Depends......

Elon Must said he won't be selling Teslas in India due to their high import taxes which amount to about 100% of the value of the car.

Suggesting that they will never be available here.

Mmmm yes if you are a general who seem to become billionaires in a career that pays a fairly small income...

The mega rich elite are spending their over-inflated baht before the whole house of cards comes crashing down.

Well, the exchange rate ensured, that the cars got 8% cheaper - if they were imported officially with full invoicing of what they had cost originally.

In Thailand I would say yes probably, wealth is so often gained corruptly. This has a negative impact on the potential for the countries progress.

Double post an irritating quirk of this app

Good luck to them,  twice over about 5 years I've seen Italian supercars overturned on the freeway in Bangkok. Their driving skills are not real good.
