Hi,

After deliberations I have decided to bring my soon to be Thai wife back to the UK

for a few years.

I would like to have a house built in Thailand and have joint ownership with my wife

can anyone tell me if I can do this simply, I don't want my wife to think I don't trust

her but I'm not stupid enough to put it in her name. I would like us to own it jointly

and have this home as our goal.

Why would it be stupid to if you trust her, if you don't trust her but want to give her the impression that you do then that is dishonest really.

I'm always amused with guys who spend lots of money and maybe pay taxes plus file tax returns to protect their interests in property that they can't own anyways.

The very FIRST thing you have to look at is if you would or even could live in the house if you divorced your wife. Most (not all) of these houses are up country and certainly would NOT be a place for a single guy to live.

I too have a Thai wife and have bought her property. If it goes bad, I'll simply walk away. No way would I live out in the boonies by myself. The golden rule is to NOT spend more than you can afford to walk away from. That advice has been repeated thousands of times on Thai Visa but is still ignored by many.

Not everyone builds in the boonies. Where my property (in wife's name of course) is located it's 90 kilometers from her village (the boonies). If we ever had a problem she would go back to her village. She has no support system here. I've got friends here (farangs) who have built houses. I have the 30 + 30 lease. There is no clear-cut answer to riddle of property/house decisions.

If you are going to be moving back to the UK I suggest you don't build your house in Thailand at all until if and when you return to live in Thailand permenently.

If you build a house now it is going to deteriate, need maintenance, management, security etc.

Stick the money in a tax free investment in the UK where it will not need constant worrying about, and then build your Thai house as and when needs must.
