Pattaya: Snatch thieves strike yet again - and once more it's a Russian victim

Snatch thieves on a motorcycle have once again robbed a Russian tourist.

It is the third such attack in the last two weeks. All the victims have been Russians, some with children.

The latest incident happened around 9.30 pm last night as 41 year old Sapagova Akmaral walked along Sukhumvit Road near the Rong Mai Kheet intersection.

Two thieves on a motorcycle grabbed her purple handbag that contained 700 baht and a Xiaomi brand phone.

As the thieves snatch her bag she was thrown to the ground and smashed her knee.

Rescue services attended to the injured lady at the scene.

Bang Lamung police and Lt Col Piyapong Ensarn of the tourist police were at the scene but the thieves got clean away - yet again.

And they wonder why Pattaya is dead, when those that actually 'do' come get robbed !

If they were at the scene, why didn't they arrest the thieving scumbags!

If Pattaya  wants to be a “family destination”, you cannot have thugs riding around on motorbikes snatching gold necklaces or purses from mothers / wives while they’re innocently walking along a major street in the city.

Solution? More walking police patrol ( which will never happen in Thailand)  and  stiffer fines on these thieves.

True, the Chinese are mostly “protected” from such cruelty since they travel in groups and are confined to their tour buses. Russians are more independent and do not necessarily come to Thailand on bus tours. Unfortunately, there are parts in all big resort cities around the world one needs to be  cautious when walking around at night.

-Single men do not face this danger as much as women do when walking around the city ( unless they’re  not using their common sense or trying to pick up a “companion” along Beach Rd 2am in the morning).????

Unfortunately there will always be an underbelly in any society so we're left to minimise the chances of being a victim of crime by taking preventative measures.

The wife and I wouldn't go out in Pattaya or Bangkok with a handbag, man bag or any obvious signs of wealth, ever.  For me I'd be more concerned with hitting our heads on the pavement during a snatch attempt rather than losing our possessions as possessions can be replaced.  A brain injury or suchlike is a different kettle of fish.

Some of the out away places young Russian couples stay is one reason. Dark at 6pm, walking in back sois to small guesthouses not surprised there isn't more

They’ve been waiting for Ivan’s to return, WIn Win for Pattaya Thugs maybe get some LB’s to join the  fun.

Just one more reason why the tourists are finding better, safer places to be.

One appropriate response to such an apparent 'crime pattern' would be to use a 'decoy', backed up by two or more 'undercover' law enforcement officers, including a nearby 'pursuit bike'.  It works!!  In this particular crime pattern obviously a western looking / dressing female decoy is required.  It is probable that a viable volunteer or other suitable justice embracing individual could be located.  There are some fantastic brave and proud women who would jump at this exciting opportunity.  And, that is just the way it is.

Pattaya is certainly Thailand's hub of snatches.

After all it was founded on the tourists desire of the snatch.

Aww cut out all the fuss. A hand grenade attached by string from pin to wrist in the handbag or simply a booby trapped bag that explodes on opening. I saw a few guys sporting gold on Friday night walking about.

So no CCTV cameras work; no police work; (after dark after four or five hours banditry.)

What can we do to restore Pattaya's reputation?  Every victim will return & FB all their friends/comrades who will go elsewhere.

Police need to set up a sting operation, BUT put a grenade in the bag, but when its snatched the pin is pulled by hidden cord.

That would put a stop to the muggers.

And any innocent passers by.

Perhaps a booby trapped bag that explodes when opened, or simply covered anything nearby in blue paint. Better still would be a police force and working cameras!

Use a small explosive device maybe just big enough to take off their hand or arm if they servive they might think twice before doing it again

Crime seems to have increased in Pattaya since the demographics changed. Pattaya was so much better in the old days in so many ways. But at a slight tangent? Am I the only one to think the Russian family with kids and babies is a bit odd? Even a bit suspicious?
