Rise in minimum daily wage deemed acceptable

The rise in daily minimum wage announced yesterday (December 6) was set at an appropriate rate, said Thanawat Pholwichai, director of the Centre for Economic and Business Forecasting of the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce.

 

 

He estimated that the hike would see business operators paying an additional Bt30 billion in wages a year to labourers.

 

From this point of view, the rate is acceptable and not too high, he said, adding that it was speculated earlier that the daily minimum wage would increase by between Bt10 and Bt15. 

 

The National Wage Committee announced today (December 6) that it will raise the minimum wage by Bt6 in nine provinces and Bt5 for others. 

 

The committee will propose the new wage for Cabinet approval as soon as possible as it intended the increase to take effect on January 1, 2020. Supant Mongkolsuthree, chairman of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), said he believes the industrial sector could cope with the new rate in spite of the ongoing economic deceleration.

 

The hike, he said, would mostly affect SMEs and the farm sector as they are labour-intensive sectors while major industrial firms could adapt by deploying automation/robotics system.

Of course it is! It´s a 2% rise in wages, which would be appropriate in most countries in the world.

The people that reacted yesterday with disgust and telling that it was a shame, have to re-think. It´s not the rise in wages that are wrong, it´s the all over low wages in total that is not okey.

Maybe the people reacting are aware of what corporate greed brings?

 

The more wages go up, the more likelyhood the cost living goes up exponentially, since retailers and big business have the perfect excuse to raise prices.

 

Will do nothing to help the wage slaves.

They might get an extra 10-20 baht but everything they buy has the potential to go up 5baht

And in what part of the world is the same practise not beeing used? What you just said is that it doesn´t matter how much rise workers get, because the prices go up as well. So, then it has nothing to do with the amount then, right?

It totally disgusts me the greed of the Thai elite. Gone are the days of the justification of poverty wages as Thailand is now more expensive than the UK etc. My wife just started a little job helping her friend out working in her restaurant and being paid £8.50 an hour plus £6.50 in tips, so she earned in one hour what a Thai person would earn in a 12 hour day and that is just so wrong.

And let's not forget that massively reducing the gap was a strong point in the FF manifesto. 

 

Perhaps this item is another reason why the gov't and it's powerbase are trying to remove FF and Khun Thanathorn from the playing field?

As already said the disparity is the item that needs major attention and reduction.

How come they n ever use that argument when politicians, CEOs, white collar workers get raises?

Well of course its very convenient if you can give yourself a pay rise. 

And the CEOs all look after themselves, even if they've had a bad year.

 

Just look at retirement packages politicians the world over reward themselves...

 

In Australia for example, they only have to be in parliament a few years,

they get to circumvent all the "age" and other retirement taxes and restrictions.

 

They probably get a lot of other lurks and perks the public doesn't even know about.

 

The previous prime ministers used to get unlimited lifetime free international travel, but i think they done away with that now.

 

The Australian public are asleep to what the baรtardร get up to.

 

I suppose thats what you get when everyone is so bored,

doped up on either legal or illegal drugs...

booze and sport distracting them from whats really going on.

That would only be the case if everybody were paid the same.

 

Few things in Thailand are priced based on what it would cost to produce it using unskilled Thai labour.

 

Those on the minimum wage are mostly cut off from consumables and even paying for their children’s higher education, keeping them in a poverty trap.

 

Though another 5-6 baht/day is not going to change anything. Need huge reforms and higher taxes on the rich to build up a proper healthcare, education, and pension system.

So now you comparing and expecting for thai unskilled and uneducated to get paid as much as In UK?

 

people whine about breakfast costing $3 and you want to raise wages to levels of UK?

In a normal country yes, but it is the rich who are in control here and they dont have to answer to anyone.
