I renewed my yearly extention at the end of October and only just scraped through as my International transfer was 5000 baht short for January. I was told as I am married to a Thai and we have a child that we could change to a family visa and have 400,000 baht deposited here in Thailand.

Do I have to inform the I.O. in advance that I want to change to the family visa next October? Or do I wait until the time arrives when I have to renew? Do I have to have the 400,000 baht in the bank here 2/3 months in advance of my renewal. One more thing, Do I have to leave any of the money in the bank all year? The 400,000 is no problem as I need to transfer money from the UK but if I did the 800,000 that would concern me as I do not want to tie up that amount most of the year. I renew in Sukhothai and I have problem understanding their replies to my questions even with my wife helping. Thanks in advance.

No need to inform them in advance. Just have everything ready to apply for an extension of stay based upon marriage.

The 400k baht only has to be in the bank for 2 months before you do the application. There is no requirement to keep it in the bank after you apply other than possibley until your return after 30 days to get your one year extension stamp.

You can also prove 40k baht of income to apply for the extension.
