Udon: "Lovely father" murders wife and grown children then hangs himself from mango tree in the garden

A security guard described by his father-in-law as a lovely and caring father bludgeoned his wife and two grown up daughters to death with a wooden club in the family home in Phen district. He then hanged himself from a mango tree in the garden.

Inside the house was a ghastly scene.

Near the corpses was a tray with incense and flowers. Outside a toilet was a detailed letter in Thai apologizing and trying to explain why this tragedy had happened.

Neighbors did nothing to help after hearing an argument and screams. They thought it was the sound of dogs and cats.

Phen police found a large crowd of neighbors after they were called to the two story house in Chiang Wang sub-district in the north eastern Thai province of Udon Thani on Sunday, reported Sanook.

Hanging from a nylon cord attached to a branch of a mango tree was 50 year old Thaisan.

Inside the house there was blood in the kitchen.

In the hall were the bodies of his wife Watcharaporn, 50, and daughters Khachaporn, 23, and Sasithorn, 19.

A 50 cm long bloodstained piece of wood was found next to the bodies.

At the foot of the bodies was a tray with incense, flowers and a bottle of liquid. The bodies had been deceased at least 6 hours.

Outside the bathroom was a letter.

The letter apologized to brothers and sisters for trouble this would cause. It mentioned debts surrounding sending the children to university, a car being hire purchased and only 60,000 baht being left.

It mentioned that the writer - it was Thaisan's handwriting - had hoped that the elder daughter would be able to help pay for the younger one's university fees. But she had no work herself after graduation.

So he had decided to kill everyone.

Bunruam, 62, a neighbor said that she had heard the sound of a man and wife arguing as she was tending to her buffalo at 7pm on Saturday evening. There were also cries for help but she did nothing to intervene.

Other neighbors spoke of hearing sounds but thought it was cats and dogs. Nobody went to help until someone saw Thaisan hanging from the tree behind the locked gate of the property.

Grandfather to the two young women Bunjan, 76, said his son-in-law was a security guard and his daughter was an employee at the Mom Mai center in Phen. Their eldest daughter had finished a food tech degree at Khon Kaen University and the youngest was in her first year at the same uni.

He said that Thaisan was a lovely guy who did everything that he could to help his wife and children including borrowing 2 million baht for their tertiary education. But when he had alcohol inside him he was someone else.

He expressed profound shock saying he never would have believed that he could have done such a thing.

If only he had approached relatives about his problems, none of this might have happened, he said.

Seems like a not so clever father .If he have trouble and kill himself, so be it. He should have had the respect to let eachother family member decide themself between life or death. Maybe the daughters would still have loved him even without a university degree and a poor father.

I think the problem is family members don't realize the stress put on the person working in the family. A lot of older children in high school and university and even older think that money grows on trees.

There we only need two sentences of your huge post.

Return question: Why would somebody working put up with press and attitude from the ones demanding? Just set the rules stright from start and stop beeing a bunch of children.

I think the problem is family members don't realize the stress put on the person working in the family. A lot of older children in high school and university and even older think that money grows on trees. Those with kind hearts often do everything for those around them trying to give them the modern life. University is expensive and no matter where a kid goes, he'll see other kids with things or doing things that he wants to do. The kids will ask for more and more from their parents. I've asked students and many of them will lie to get the money for that Ipad which all the other kids are starting to use in class and they'll lie for money to go on a trip with their friends on the weekend. Between the costs of education, housing, food and then all the other demands it destroys a lot of people like this man.

First he was a victim of his own kindness, second probably a victim of his wife and kids who couldn't imagine working to help him, and also a victim of Thai society which thinks the wife and kids shouldn't have to work. He was doomed. He went over the edge with no out. A lot of people live responsible lives and are kind to everyone, only to eventually break. You can scold him but he was not an evil soul. Evil souls spend their lives in greed, apathy, abuse or worse.

I feel for this guy because my life is just like his. I have the wife and two step-daughters, one graduated and doing little with her life, and another in university. My wife won't work and doesn't feel my pain. At the end of the month I have no money, and I have another daughter in her teens to pay for. I have no future really. I won't break like him but I am ready to dump the whole family and Thai culture. There are a lot of people like him and I out here trying to get by. It's hopeless.  My advice to anyone is to stay single and don't have kids. Those in a relationship with a lazy partner who can, jump ship and find a new life before its too late.

As usual, even if they feel something is wrong.

Everything you said is correct, they were all victims himself included.

Children who feel they have to go to University to get a degree to have any chance of getting a reasonable job. In todays market those jobs are few & far between.

I wonder if they sat as a family together and discussed the issues, or if father just bottled everything up until this tragedy happened?

Get your a rs e in gear and get away from those leeches. It's never too late to start again and if you have a regular pension coming, there's more reason to move on to pastures anew.

Wishing you the best in your new life.

I was thinking the same. Take your natural daughter and leave the rest to grow up and fend for themselves.

if you are over 35 best avoid marriage if you have substantial assets ... even more important for those settling in Thailand.

I have a Thai wife but she does work. I have a lazy step daughter who goes to university About all she is good for is sticking her hand out for money. We have a few arguments about that lazy girl getting out and finding a part time job like most uni students do But Mum is paying for it and if i had to pay I would not hang around. Feel sorry for mum but that is what Thais do  They still class kids at 23 as kids Where I come from they are classed as adults. Kids first Farang second. Never will change. So i can feel for this guy He worked and worked and got nowhere instead of family getting off there <deleted> and doing something Especially the lazy girls. But I guess murder would be a last resort but something must of just snapped in his head. As for neighbours saying they thought it was cats fighting very funny.

That is too simple, in the Thai society it is the same as Europe 70 or 80 years ago, the man is the provider in the family and if he can't he's a loser. I have provided for my Thai family for 14 years, my partner, two step daughters and my own son, but through the grace of providence they don't regard me as Mr. money tree and all (except my 12 year old son) generate income of some kind, even the two stepdaughters who study. They have bought their own iphones, my son uses a lap top given to him by my eldest stepdaughter and my partner is always busy doing field work, selling make up, and always looking for an opportunity to generate income. This wasn't my doing it is a result of their own characters. I am regarded as a figure of authority without having to put my foot down but I am also expected to resolve problems of any magnitude that is beyond their ability. It is a matter of luck, providence, it can't be forced so I feel sorry for this man (as well as his victims of course) who has done his best, far beyond his capabilities until he broke under the strain.

Easy here too, but it will take 2 questions this time:

1. How do you really know that he has done his best, and far beyond his capabilities? I the news it stands he have 60k left, and maybe he broke easy. I might be wrong, and you might know him personally to have all this insight.

2. How do you know that you can not put down the foot and tell people that they can not sit on their fat ar$es doing nothing but the regular phone in hand connected to Facebook/Messenger routine? In that field I actually have insight and are living with the proof that it works.

Don't females work in Thailand? Are all females housewives or house bound in a normal Thai family? At what age does the Thai society allow 'kids' to go to work? ????

Nice analysis, excepting for a couple of unavoidable biased comments.
