luudee
Hi ! I have two water tanks, which I fill up from my well and then use a constant pressure system to supply my house. This system has now been in place for about 15 years, without any major maintenance. My concern is that bacteria might build up in the tanks. I have no evidence, or any other suspicions, just thinking to much. ???? Does anybody clean or otherwise maintain their water tanks ? Any additives or so ? Somebody suggested to me to add a cup of 50% Hydrogen Peroxide to each tank every months to kill any bacteria (the tanks are 2,000 Liters each). Thanks, rudi
sometimewoodworker
The H2O2 will probably not have much effect as it will be too dilute. If you are concerned then a small amount of chlorine (available from pool supply shops) or a cap fill of domestic bleach will probably be much better. cheeryble
Have you died yet? Any outbreaks of cholera in your neighbourhood? If not remember that, like those silly disinfectant chopping boards, without a few bacteria to spar with, you will lose your resistance for when something nastier comes along. canopy
Such tanks should be opaque with lid to prevent algae growth and keep things from getting inside. Periodically such tanks should be cleaned. This means emptying it, washing the sides, and rinsing out all sediment that settles on the bottom. No need for any chemicals. You can have your water tested if desired.

stubuzz
I turn of the water inlet and run the water down to a low level. Then i open the drain and use a jet wash to clean the inside of the tank. Periodically i will add 1 cap of Clorox per 1000l of water.
