Temperature inversion traps dust in Bangkok and suburbs today

Bangkok and its suburbs are experiencing one of the most polluted days today (Thursday) due to an unusually high accumulation of fine airborne dust being caused by stagnant air, producing a temperature inversion effect.

Normally, air temperature decreases with an increase in altitude.  An inversion traps airborne pollution, such as dust and smoke, close to the ground.  An inversion can also suppress convection by acting as a “cap”.  If this cap is broken, for any of several reasons, convection of any moisture present can erupt into violent thunderstorms.

According to the air flow simulation model of the Marine Meteorological Centre, at the Meteorological Department today, air circulation in and around Bangkok is minimal, causing fine dust particles to accumulate in the lower atmosphere, especially between noon and 11pm, when wind speed is forecast to be only 2-3 knots, which is too weak to disperse the dust.

The Pollution Control Department reported this morning that only four areas were found to have excessive amount of PM2.5 dust.  They are Rama IV Road in Pathumwan district, Intharapitak Road and Tambon Hirunrujee in Thon Buri district and Tambon Plabpla in Wang Thong Lang district.

While this smog is annoying and partly health hazard, it's also good to be occasionally notified how much pollutants cities push to the atmosphere.

Hopefully this works as reminder and push to remove most active pollutant sources from the cities. Really old cars, trucks and busses. Factories without proper filtering systems. etc.

Rivers worldwide have been undrinkable for ages around the world. Let's prevent the same happening to the air we breath.

There is no hocus-pocus solutions. Only removing the sources of pollution works. To do so requires money. I don't care if one doesn't believe in climate change and wishes to keep on polluting our planet. Smogs like this however hits to home much faster. When it's difficult to breath, the pollution has gone too far already. It's time to act against air and other pollutants.

I thought it's caused by unchecked burning

Although an inversion layer may be currently responsible for this, the real responsibility lays firmly on the shoulders of the army, who are beyond apathetic, indifferent, and without solutions for this current airpocalpyse. A dozen things could be done if they were serious and competent people.

Blame it on anything but negligence ????

Only 4 places have too much pollution?

And, it's the winds fault?  Blaming mother (nature) for not cleaning up after them?

I think Uncle Tu should make temperature inversions illegal!

You may find your comments would be better directed as below if you are including the "government" in any actions!

One of the best photos I've seen showing the effect of smoke etc being trapped under a temperature inversion. From uk a while ago.

When the day warms up and a bit of wind starts to clear it in BKK the wind probably brings in all the <deleted> from the burning that happens outside BKK area on a daily basis.
