Immigration's BMW "Smart Cars" the latest tool to rid Thailand of illegal foreigners

Naew Na published two reports - one from Pattaya and one from Nonthaburi - in which immigration's much heralded Smart Cars (BMWs) were used  to arrest illegal foreigners.

In the first story Pol Col Naren Khreuangsanuk sent in his officers to the Moo 10, Nong Prue area of Pattaya yesterday where they saw a foreigner acting suspiciously.

They named him as Al Cha Beebee S. Nasser Calfan Hamed.

When they had successfully keyed his name into the machine in the BMW it was determined that he was on overstay of seven days.

Job done, the Omani was handed over to the local police for processing.

Meanwhile, in Nonthaburi north west of Bangkok, the chief of immigration Pol Col Thanongsak Jailuang had received information on Thursday about illegal goings on at an Indian restaurant in Soi Samakhee 29.

The BMW was rolled out and sent to the restaurant on Friday where Somen Mondal, 22, was found on overstay of 806 days and Giresh, 32, had outstayed his welcome by 152 days.

They didn't have work permits either and were charged with working illegally or doing work outside the remit to which they would be allowed to work.

They were handed over to the Pak Kret police.

Both stories featured identical paragraphs in which the two chiefs were quoted as "revealing" that they were acting on the orders of immigration chief Lt-Gen Sompong Chingduang to clean up Thailand from the activities of illegal foreigners.

Both stories similarly advised the public to call 1178 if they had anything or anyone to report.

Should have gone with a Lambo or Porsche - BMW are one step above a Camry.

Aim higher kid.

What would justify this being labeled a smart car would be a revolving Falangometer on the roof that slowly scanned in a 360 degree circle searching for miscreants. If it homed in on one it should emit an ' Eee-oop lads ' signal to notify the IO controller.

The following is a picture of a similar vehicle recently tested in Bradford and Southall. It was a failure as it got too hot and kept burning out the circuit boards. Should be OK here though.

With many circuses going out of business, aren’t there a number of “clown cars” available that would be more appropriate and less expensive?

  • Popular Post

Wouldn't they be smarter if they were less conspicuous, and if they were considerably less expensive to purchase and run?

The practices of immigration over the last 12 months or so have been insidious to an absurd degree.

It's sad to see how pathetic and creepy their rank xenophobia is.

flashy beemers are too conspicuous, risk alerting the evildoing malign foreigners.

this would be a great opportunity to put their new technology to the test.

just deploy their new fleet of spy submarines in bangkok's canal system.

what's wrong with a bicycle ?   even cheaper ????

One has to wonder if a Toyota and a lap top could become a smart car?

The ANPR system in UK police cars would seem to be a lot smarter than this dumb but very expensive car.

Yep a BMW will scare them off.  A mule with a tablet attached would do just the same job and more eco friendly

These vehicles have been around for a while. The sudden positive publicity wouldn't have something to do with the recent revelations by "Big Joke" of corruption in their purchase?

Translate immigration speak into regular English:

They saw a dark skinned foreigner walking down the street, so performed a random street stop.

If the immigration cops were as efficient as they have us believe why are there still so many long time overstayers. Big Joke told us he rounded them all up, Big Oud arrested 45,000 using the fantastic facial recognition gadget.

It's up to the Barvarian Motor Works now.

Anything that credits na naew as a source should be taken as seriusly as an article by the onion.

So they finally have modern police cars. We’ve had these in the west for 30+ years.

They have been let off their leash and we now see their true nature and just how deep seeded their xenophobia is.

They’re just getting started. Now that money is being tossed around for new toys, brace yourself.

OMG, could you imagine the carnage if a Thai got behind the wheel of a Bugatti???

No new Buggati is for sale in Thailand;
far too expensive ..
the least expensive is worth around 3 million euros in Europe so not far from 9 million euros here in Thailand, more than 300 million baht for ONE automobile.

which can travel more than 400 km / h (more than 110 meters per second);
the slightest crash at this speed; we only recover tiny pieces of the car and its occupant (s).

Wow, they found a foreigner acting suspiciously, and then consulted with their BMW smart vehicle who determined the foreigner had overstayed his visa by seven days.  Then on a hotline tip, they discovered two Indians who chose to cook curry dishes in their Indian restaurant, instead of spending the day at immigration to renew their visas.  While these arrests were being conducted, tons of illegal drugs were flowing through Thailands border from the infamous narco state of Burma.

Hopefully, immigration will make an example of these foreign law breakers.  Maybe they can round up some immigration officers and have a photo shoot with the law breakers, before giving them a taste of what it is like to do time in a third world prison.  It shouldn't be too bad as long as the law breakers are into man love, and don't mind eating a small bowl of maggot infested rice daily.

I suspect, international news agencies will dispatch their top reporters to Thailand, to report on this story.  It warms my heart to see the immigration hotline being used by concerned Thai citizens to rid Thailand of foreign law breakers.  I tried to report one of these foreigners walking across the street at a cross walk impeding vehicle traffic, but the hotline operator couldn't speak English so the foreigner got away.  I'm sure the foreigner was aware pedestrians do not have the right away on Thailands roadways but crossed the street anyway.

On the other hand I imagine Somchay to be distracted by the machine and forget to brake at a red light; his wallet must be well inflated to pay for repairs;
when you know a grease change costs a trifle more than 20,000 euros in France.

If only it was smart enough to catch shopping mall gold shop mass murders instead of heinous 7 day over stayers????

What a shame. The idea that these cars are somehow necessary. That they can buy them without being questioned. The nation is so broken.

I would have recommended batmobiles to catch the illegals.

Yes, we all know that the West was and is still 'highly' developed. The puzzle is why the people of the developed world leave home to find greener pastures in the 3rd world, undeveloped, sometimes uncivilised countries... ????

Is that contraption on the roof a Falangometer that slowly scans in a 360 degree circle searching for miscreants? If it homed in on one, does it emit an ' Eee-oop lads ' signal to notify the IO controller?
