In many cases the parents pimp them out to places like Pattaya, then when they meet a foreign sucker they try to fleece him with the Virgin Mary story and have the cheek to ask for the long term bar fine for marrying them. You know, the ones that you see as most of them are stupid. ???????????? Actually I must give it to you regarding the dorks that comes to Thailand and get all love sick on the first woman they see in a bar. IvorLott
The OP is clearly asking in the wrong place, as obviously every married member here, has either married a Hi-So General's daughter, who pay them to take her off his hands, or appear to be grooming some young super - intelligent lass through university in return for her favours under the guise of 'marriage'. OP, do the sensible thing and export your GF to where SIn sot doesn't exist.

Isaan Alan
Not sure if someone else has mentioned this but when a Thai man marries a Thai woman, yes he pays a sinsord but he often marries into property because his wife will have been left some of the family property if the parents have died. So in that case it is a real estate transaction. A problem there for us because farangs cannot own property. So many stories about giving it back after the wedding because it's all for show. They care so much about "face" in their community and to their family and friends. Such a burden to carry! So different to Western ideas of marrying for love. For Thais love is shown by giving money in cash or gold. I am reliably informed that a previously married woman especially with children is not generally entitled to any sinsord. However many Thais will argue about that

Popular Post bwpage3
You can define Sinsod between two schools of thought when Sinsod comes up in discussions by farangs. Camp 1: Those farang's that have a ton of money/income and gladly pay. (In the west they would pay for a full blown traditional wedding) Camp 2: Those farang's that have little money, pay nothing, think Sinsod is Thai tradition only and 100 other crazy excuses not to pay. (In the west they would go to the courthouse and have the marriage paper signed versus paying for a full blown wedding). Even though some farangs understand the game, they don't pay anything because most don't have anything to pay with. We have read all the post about how many farangs live on 30K a month, you can pretty much bet they are not coming up with 300K Sinsod no matter what, Camp 2. You read this post and hear crazy things like, I didn't pay anything but I am putting a daughter through college? Really? Is that it? Isn't educating your kids part of life and not something extravagant? If that is a claim to fame, you don't have enough of a pot to <deleted> in. I think if one did a serious study on divorce, you would find a lot more people in Camp 2 have been divorced than in Camp 1? It is a know fact that there are many foreigners living in Thailand on the very basic's, got married and dragged some Thai lady into their meager existence of a life, all just to have food and shelter. Sinsod is very important in Isaan. Anyone that understands Sinsod, understands it is part of a deep rooted Thai culture, whether you are Thai or not. You married a Thai in Thailand. I paid around 400K in Sinsod and another 10 baht of gold, which to this day my wife cherishes. The money was returned by my father in law to my wife, and I had already told them I did not care if they kept the money or not. At that time 400k was worth around $10k US A full blown wedding in the US can cost 4 times that much. The whole experience of marching through the village to her house will never be forgotten. It was for my Father in Law's face, so for one day he could be the king of the village. We had a huge reception in the village, with the big tents, live music, dancers, pig roasts. When my wife and I had to get on the stage to make a speech, she burst out crying, stating " I will never forget what you have done for me" 11 years later she never has. 1

Its sad that this is your only take-away from a post where someone identifies that he’s been respectful of the family he’s moving into. You seem to lack the ability to recognise that not all cultures are the same as ours. I suspect any cross cultural relationship you are involved with involves a lot of tension through your failure to accommodate other traditions, cultures and people.

Yes, there was tension at times and so there should have been. In time you'll figure out a happy medium where both cultures are respected. Once again, it's give and take. My observation is that when it comes to money matters within farang/thai relationships, Thai culture often governs and I wonder why.
