Cancelling work visa and applying for ext based on marriage

Featured Replies

Cancelling work visa and applying for extension based on marriage..............getting confusing info CW and other places.....can anyone help?

Basically, I have a work related visa & work permit, which I've extended yearly for many years. Now wish to quit work, and convert my visa/extension to one based on marriage (I am married to a Thai wife).

I have the required money in the bank and am clear about what I need regarding docs to fill-out and copies & photos and so on.......

....but am having huge problems getting perfect clarity on 2/3 key points :

    1. I work in Bangkok, but will move to Korat and live there after I have quit work and applied/got the marrriage visa. My visa was originally issued in Bangkok, so do I have to cancel the visa in Bangkok or can I do it in Korat?

    2. Work permit cancellation: Do I have to cancel that the same day I cancel the visa? (cancelling work permit in Bangkok and then driving to korat and cancelling the visa would be a hassle.) And do I have to cancel the visa & work permit in a particular order? Visa first, then wp?

   3. The letter from the school saying I'm terminating the job would be dated the day I cancel the visa/wp? I was told at CW immigratation that I can cancel the work visa and apply for the marriage visa within a period of 21 days BEFORE my job/visa finishes, so if I cancel the visa say, on 24th February, but my last day at work/day my visa expires is 14th March, what date does the school put on the letter as my last day?

I hope I don't sound like a complete idiot (if I do, frankly I don't care), but somehow I've got myself really confused. I have actually been to CW immigration AND Korat, but the info they gave was sparse and confusing....ie, one person at CW said I DON'T have to cancel the work permit on the same day but Korat said i DO have to. Plus they all seemed too busy to explain things clearly. Confusing!  Any help would be really appreciated.

1. I think you have extension of stay based upon working not a visa. Your extension would have to be canceled in Bangkok where it was issued.

2/3 The work permit can be canceled the day before you cancel your extension. You will need a termination letter stating the last day you will be working. You can go to immigration a few days before the date on the termination letter and they will post date the cancelation to that day.

In Korat you will be applying for a one year extension of stay based upon marriage. You will need 400k baht in a Thai bank for 2 months on the day your apply or proof of 40k baht income.

Thanks so much for that info, ubonjoe. Very, very useful!

Just another query and I'll try and make it a yes/no to save your time :

I will be cancelling the wp and ext on March 2nd, 2 weeks before the original last day of working according to the date my work ext is supposed to expire on March 13th, so the date of the 'last day I will be working' on my termination letter should be the original last day (March 13th) or the date I go to cancel the work permit and work ext. (March 2nd) ?

I need my employer to write the correct date on that termination letter and i'm worried about screwing that up!

Sorry if I am being really dumb, ubonjoe. Apologies....& thanks.

Yes that should work.

A couple of questions from this post Joe as i'm in a fairly similar position except I'm going for the retirement visa rather than the marriage one.

Have I got the process right?

My employment ceases at my school on April 1st,  so can I go, armed with the termination of employment letter, to the Labour Ministry to cancel the work permit a few days before, i.e. Thursday March 26th?

2. The next day, a Friday, can I go to Chaeng Wattana to cancel my extension based on employment, and likely get it postdated to April 1st?

That weekend I move permanently to my wife's home in Udon and on April 1st, enter the Udon immigration office to apply for a retirement visa?

Thanking you in advance for any advice.
