UK IDP

Featured Replies

Am I likely to get into trouble over this? I suppose it could technically invalidate any insurance. I got an IDP in May 2024 ahead of trip to Thailand and used it again in 2025. It is valid until 2027. How ever I was reading up the DVLA site with says "An International Driving Permit (IDP) for UK drivers is valid for 12 months for 1926 and 1949 permits, and up to 3 years for a 1968 permit, or until your UK driving licence expires, whichever comes first."

My UK licence expired in Sept 2024 and was renewed and valid until Sept 2027. So I should have got a new IDP in Sept 2024 or at least Dec 2024 ahead of a follow trip I took to Thailand. I don't suppose any Thai police with suss as they don't look at the UK licence but an insurance company may well do so.

So my question can I drive in Thailand on a UK licence if on holiday and is there any time limit. I am aware that hire companies require and IDP but I will only be driving a private car not a hire car. I suppose if I did have a serious accident and the Thai police dug deeper then I might be in deep do do. May be better to renew the IDP before my next trip.

Your UK driving licence has been renewed/extended rather than a new one issued - it has the same driver number and if you look on the back your test pass dates are the originals.

I'm not a lawyer but if I was in your position I wouldn't give it a second thought - you have a valid UK licence and a valid IDP.

PS: I just checked and I am in your exact position - a new licence but an old IDP!
